Other UEFA league games: match week 5

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Actually, sad to say this, but it would be better for us if the Rags won their group, reducing our chance of a 'tough' fixture in the last 16 by throwing Basel or CSKA into the mix.

If in the group stage of the Champions League two or more teams finish equal on points after all the group matches have been played, the following criteria are applied to determine the group rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the matches between the teams in question
  2. Superior goal difference from the matches between the teams in question
  3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches between the teams in question
  4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the matches between the teams in question
  5. If teams still have an equal ranking, the above criteria 1-4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine the final ranking. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, the criteria 6-12 below apply
  6. Superior goal difference in all group matches
  7. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches
  8. Higher number of away goals scored in all group matches
  9. Higher number of wins in all group matches
  10. Higher number of away wins in all group matches
  11. Lower disciplinary points from cards in all group matches (red=3, yellow=1)
  12. Higher club coefficient
See the Regulations of the Champions League 2017/2018 (pdf file at uefa.com) for a complete and formal description of all regulations.

Currently (excluding results against Benfica):

Team F A GD
Utd 7 2 5
Basel 4 5 -1
CSKA 3 7 -4

From a quick spreadsheet calculation I think that means for United to finish third, CSKA have to win by 5 clear goals and Basel need to win by 2 more goals than United score. To finish second, just the CSKA criterion is important.

Yep, I'd go with that.

I don't know whether a team's ever been eliminated with 12 points in the group stage before. I think we were only the 2nd team to be eliminated with 10 points back in 2011-12.

I'm not too fussed about it. Scum are highly likely to finish first but it will occupy their resources ahead of the derby to avoid the big defeat that would possibly send them to the Europa League (dependent upon the result of Basel's final game) and them finishing first would put Basel or CSKA into the pot for our opponents for the first knockout round. Also, there will be plenty of sharks in the runners up pot for them! Important to me is only that scum don't get through the first CL knockout round and end up in the pot 3 area for next year's CL - but preferably that they only qualify for the EL.

Ironically, a win for Shakhtar against us would see them push the Scum (if they were to lose) into 16th place (temporarily, at least) in the UEFA rankings, it seems, and thus a step closer to Pot 3.

Arsenal give away another penalty for a yet another shove but Hartson, with Wenger-like blinkers, calling it "just a tangle of legs": 1-0 to Cologne 62'.

Now 5 minutes left.

Finished.

For a variety of reasons , i was at the Basel - Rags match last night .

If Maureen puts a team out like that against City , well , i might have to get a new city shirt . When i was at the 6-1 drubbin the other year , i bought a city shirt and had number 9 on the back and the name of our latest russian signing „Shudavbin” .

Ordering a number 11 shirt tonight for our new signing.

Atalanta scored that 5th goal in the FOURTH good goal attempt during injury time. OK, it was a dead rubber for Everton, playing for nothing more than pride, but it was a truly atrocious performance. The Rooney Effect.
