Give him a break, he's hardly played.
He'll come good.

Strikes me that that’s the long term aim.
I really think he’ll be fine even before the end of this season.
When I see him being brought on in the last 10-15 minutes of games for Sterling or Sane, it doesn’t make me think he’s here as a winger.
I feel quite confident that between him David and Kev we will retain the ball and see out the remainder of the game tormenting the opposition into submission.
He’s not a traditional winger and he shouldn’t be judged on being played out there in games such as last night.
The guy has fabulous technical ability and once up to speed will be understudy to David IMO.
Let him get familiar with the team and he’ll be fine.

This is the key issue. Pep acknowledged himself post match that he doesn't have the speed of Sane or Sterling and when he came on in Napoli for Sterling it was to play a different role. I think he might find Foden more than a match over time though, they both have the same skill-set, game and stature but Phil is quicker and has a more powerful shot,

That may be so, however the larger than life carrot we could go for is having TWO merlin like operatives in the next few years..
that really would be something.
Either way the competition is good to have.

Why do we always do these pile-on threads in a players first season?

I'm not so sure - for every Sane or Stones who come good and defy the doubters there's a Nolito or a Bravo who don't
this is a chastening list - first impressions may not always be accurate but sometimes they are -

like it or lump it, when he's played for us, not only has he not shined, he's not looked very good.
He's obviously got all the technical ability, but just doesn't seem to click with the rest of the team as of yet.
Time will help, and when we're smashing teams left, right and centre, he's get plenty of that as there's not much pressure.
I'd like to see a lot more from him though

He's no Merlin.
I hope he comes good but comparisons with the Magician are wide of the mark.

I don't believe they are based on what I saw from him at Monaco.
Bear in mind that he's just turned 23 whereas Silva was turning 25 halfway through the first season he was at City.
Silva also had the luxury of regular playing time early doors in his City career, Bernardo is only getting minutes here and there, add to that a lack of a preseason.
Early days yet, he may never reach Silva's level but I do believe he has the talent required to do it.

As others have pointed out there were those of us, me included (I'm ashamed to say) who had our doubts about Merlin and boy did he prove us wrong. Bernardo will come good next season and this thread will be buried. He's come over from a far inferior league to play for a manager who makes demands of his players like no other - it took most of our current superstars a season to adapt to his methods so let's give him a chance. He is the heir to Silva's crown, make no doubt about it

Sanè was absolute dirt at the start of last season. Everyone is sucking him off now!

Exactly - it takes most foreign players (Kun apart - best debut I've ever had the pleasure to witness) a season to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League

Exactly.
It’s incredible so many people can make an informed decision on his ability based on this season.
He’s hardly played and when he does play it’s usually coming on as a sub.
He was superb for Monaco and that’s what we can judge him on so far. We are playing phenomenal football at the moment and no one deserves to be dropped so he’ll find his chances limited for now.
Only once he’s had a run of games starting will we be able to make a full judgement.
