Jonny Evans transfer could happen in January as Arsenal and Man City approach West Brom
Arsenal and Manchester City have approached West Bromwich Albion about the prospect of signing Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans.
Both clubs failed with bids for Evans last summer but they remain interested in the former Manchester United centre-half as they bid to bolster their defences in this month’s transfer window.
West Brom are thought to want around £25 million for Evans, who has 18 months left on his existing contract at the Hawthorns and indicated to the Midlands club, currently second bottom of the Premier League, that he would be unwilling to sign a new deal.
Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is thought to be open to meeting West Brom’s asking price and Arsenal could also offer right back Mathieu Debuchy as part of the package.
City need cover for captain Vincent Kompany, who continues to be dogged by injury problems, and are prepared to offload Eliaquim Mangala, although the France centre-half was reluctant to move to West Brom last summer.
Everton are among a number of other suitors who have a watching interest in Evans but there is recognition that they could not compete with City or Arsenal for the 30-year-old, who wants European football and the chance to compete at the top again.
United sold Evans to West Brom for £6 million rising to £8 million in August 2015, since when he has impressed for club and country.
A ball playing centre-half, Evans fits with the way both Wenger and City manager Pep Guardiola want to play. It is thought Evans’ preference would be to remain in the North West, where his family are based, but he would be entirely open to a move to North London.
An interesting sub-plot centres around Alexis Sanchez since City are likely to bring forward plans to sign the Chile striker this month following a knee injury to Gabriel Jesus that could keep the Brazil forward out for two months.
There were reports at the weekend that City have made contact with Arsenal over Sanchez although the North London club’s £35 million valuation is thought to be far more than the Premier League leaders would be prepared to pay for a player they could sign for nothing in the summer. Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich are also interested in Sanchez.

Arsenal 'quote Manchester City £40m for Alexis Sanchez'
Arsenal have reportedly stated £40m as the asking price for winger Alexis Sanchez as Manchester City step up their efforts to sign the Chilean this month.
The Evening Standard reports that Pep Guardiola is concerned with his attacking options after Gabriel Jesus sustained knee ligament damage and will be sidelined for around six weeks.
The newspaper says that City, who are long-term admirers of Sanchez, are prepared to make an offer for the 29-year-old to provide cover for Jesus while he recovers.
Guardiola's side were in advanced talks with Arsenal over a switch for Sanchez on deadline day last summer, and after the deal fell through, City are allegedly prepared to try again this month with added impetus.
The newspaper also claims that £40m could be too high an asking price for City, who believe that a contract for the Chilean can be drawn up for less.

Pep Guardiola won't even dream of clean sweep, but Man City stars poised to top the lot
PEP GUARDIOLA refuses to even dream about the possibility of the quadruple but it seems his Manchester City stars have other ideas.
A second half blitz against Sean Dyche’s team eased them into the fourth round and maintained City’s unbeaten domestic campaign.
Tomorrow City face Bristol City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi while Basel wait in the Champions League last 16 - both favourable draws.
With the Premier League seemingly as good as won, an unprecedented clean sweep is well and truly on.
And Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is emerging as an important part of Guardiola’s side in cup competitions, insists it is a dream that drives on City’s stars.
He said: “We think about this every single day and every training session - we can win everything, and that’s why we are here.
“I am happy to be part of this team and train hard every day, waiting for my chance. The manager told me I had to be ready.
Manchester City’s likely line-up to face Bristol City at home in Carabao Cup
“We think about this every single day and every training session - we can win everything, and that’s why we are here”
Manchester City ace Oleksandr Zinchenko
“I was on loan at PSV last year, but now my goal is just to be here. Everything I do is for this.
“This is only my second year in Europe – before that I was in Russia and Ukraine and they play very different football.
“I am used to it now but last season was my first in Europe, with different football and mentality. I needed time and patience, but it has already happened and now everything is okay.”
Zinchenko has emerged as one of many Manchester City success stories this season, a winger converted to left-back by Guardiola and now, with Benjamin Mendy injured, an important back-up to injury prone Fabian Delph.
He said: “This is a new position for me but I am getting used to it and every single day I learn more – all my team-mates give me advice about what to do with the ball or without it.
“Before the game Fabian gave me advice. We always speak to each other.”
Guardiola will make changes again for tomorrow’s first leg with Championship side Bristol City although the City boss has stressed the need for the Blues to win their first trophy under him.
Guardiola said: “It is so important, a win helps to win more, and if we are there, we are going to go to London to play the final, then it’s important.
“To become a big club like the teams I’ve faced, or United, or Liverpool with their history, you have to win.
“You have to lift the titles and it’s important and we’re going to try. Nobody can take away what we’ve done so far.
“But we have to lift titles in the future, without them it’s not enough.”

New year, new club?
Man City owners keep up expansion drive with Indian rumours
Manchester City’s holding company City Football Group (CFG) is exploring further club expansion with India, the world’s second most populous nation, looking like the next market for acquisition.
Ferran Soriano, CFG’s CEO, has been in India and attended the Indian Super League (ISL) match between Jamshedpur and Mumbai City. Jamshedpur are owned by the Tata Steel company.
The ISL, according to research by Livemint, is India’s second most watched league and will show a 25% increase in advertising, sponsorship and gate receipts in the 2017/18 season.
The speed at which the Indian football market is developing can be seen by the 41 million viewers who watched the 2016/17 finals – 7.5 times higher than the previous season finals. What hasn’t been so fast to develop is the management and infrastructure behind the teams – despite their high franchise acquisition prices – though steps are moving rapidly in that direction with, for example, Delhi Dynamos technical partnership with the Qatar-based Aspire Academy.
Driving the Indian engagement with the game is a youth audience and the use of social and digital media.
CFG, with Manchester City in particular, has been a noteworthy leader in football’s at times slow embrace of social media opportunity.
At the start of this season CFG completed the acquisition of LaLiga’s Girona who are playing their first season in Spain’s top tier having been promoted.
Girona joined CFG’s stable of clubs that as well as Man City, contains New York City FC from the MLS, Australia’s Melbourne City, Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos and Club Atletico Torque in Uruguay.
CFG, which is 13% owned by Chinese investment companies China Media Capital and CITIC Capital, is also believed to be looking for a club acquisition in China.

Manchester City ticket prices in focus after Vincent Kompany's comments
Manchester City's fans have enjoyed some of the best football the Premier League has ever seen this season. Yet while Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling have been lighting up the pitch, the supporters in the stands tend to be ready and waiting to be entertained -- rather than trying to do their bit to lift the team and get the magic happening.
Most weeks, the Etihad is at capacity. Some weeks, though, it isn't -- and that's not something you'd expect of a team playing the quality of football that City are right now. Fans should be banging on the doors to get in and when they're there, they should be making the atmosphere as hostile as they can for opponents.
Of course, this isn't a City-only problem, but the club does have the opportunity to do something about it. One of the biggest issues facing supporters at the moment is ticket prices, a field where City aren't the worst offenders, but where they are complicit in not addressing the issue. Why would supporters contribute to a rocking atmosphere if the majority are feeling like they've had to pay through the nose to get in?
City's supporter-base largely comes from a working class background. The prices those fans have to pay to get in make up a large part of their income and at a time where the cost of living is higher than ever before, it's hardly surprising that some have to pick and choose what games to go to. That means much of the most vociferous support isn't always at the match -- and when it is, it has every right to want its money's worth from those on the pitch.
Vincent Kompany spoke to the BBC about Premier League ticket prices, urging top flight clubs to lower them to avoid pricing fans out of going to watch their team. City should be taking note. They're approaching a tipping point, because often when fans have given up their seat they don't come back.
The club could point to season ticket waiting lists and a nearly-full Etihad each week, but it gives a false impression. It values the casual match-goer, who may not even be that invested in Manchester City and who just wants to see some top quality Premier League football, as the same as the die-hard life-long supporters, who will make far more noise. It suggests they don't care who is in the seats, providing someone is and the money is being paid.
They could also point to their cheapest £299 season ticket, which offers a handful of fans the option of one of the best value-for-money purchases in the Premier League. There are too few of those available for it to be much more than a token gesture.
For context, City froze their season ticket prices at the end of 2015-16 -- which saw the club scrape to a disappointing fourth-placed finish, beating Manchester United to the Champions League qualifier spot on goal difference alone. That was the first time in almost a decade that the cost hadn't risen, though that changed at the end of 2016-17, when an average of two percent was put on prices.
In an era where City -- and all others in the top flight -- have more commercial partners than ever and more income from television channels broadcasting their product across the world, they can afford to cut the fans some slack.
When Pep Guardiola was asked about Kompany's comments at his prematch news conference ahead of the 4-1 FA Cup win over Burnley, he quickly shot back that he's "Not the CEO". After a moment's thought, and as the next question was being put to him, he added that he believes the CEO always wants what's best for the fans.
It was a big opportunity missed for the manager, who has spent a lot of time over his 18-months' worth of news conferences calling for the fans to get behind the team and help them when they really need it. Had he agreed with the captain, it could have sent a message to Ferran Soriano that action needs to be taken.
This is an issue that all fans of all clubs should be getting behind. Half-empty stadiums don't look good when a product is being sold worldwide like the Premier League, so instead of laughing about how many empty seats there are at rivals' grounds, supporters should be wondering why so many now choose to view their team's football in other ways.
City could be at the forefront of a movement to drive the cost of going to games down for their fans, off the back of Kompany's comments. The ticket prices for next season are only a few months away and the business people at the club will already be in discussions about them. Supporters will wait with bated breath to see if the captain's words have had any effect.

Pep Guardiola instructed Manchester City to prioritse Alexis Sanchez transfer over deal for Virgil van Dijk
Pep Guardiola instructed Manchester City to prioritise a deal for Alexis Sanchez over any possible move for new Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk, according to reports. Van Dijk completed a stunning £75million move to Anfield at the start of the month as Jurgen Klopp finally signed the Dutch defender in a deal that eclipsed the £53m City paid for Kyle Walker. The Reds were desperate to sign Van Dijk last summer but had to pull out of negotiations after being accused of ‘tapping-up’. Man City expressed interest in the 26-year-old at the time and were expected to revive their interest in January. But Guardiola chose pursuing a deal for Arsenal forward Sanchez over strengthening his defensive options at the Etihad, according to The Sun. The Gunners want £35m for Sanchez this month and City may yet decide to sign the Chilean on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season. Van Dijk enjoyed a ‘dream’ start to his career at Anfield after scoring the winner against rivals Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.

Mourinho vs Conte proves there is one thing Pep Guardiola can't change about English football
Manchester City boss has called for the football powers to cancel media conferences, but that would not be good for the gam
Pep Guardiola has made a call for the football powers to get rid of press conferences – let's hope they are not listening!
It was hard to tell how serious the Manchester City manager was being when he suggested that the FA should consider putting an end to the media's only opportunity to quiz managers.
But it is clear that he finds dealing with the media a tiresome and often irritating side of his role – he simply wants to be out on the training ground, or on the touchline, with his players, or closeted with his coaches, plotting the next victory.
Guardiola was perhaps being a little mischievous when he came out with the idea, shortly after the Blues had beaten Burnley 4-1 in the FA Cup third round.
He was asked if Sergio Aguero 's astute equaliser, neatly created by Ilkay Gundogan 's quick thinking from a free kick, was the product of work on the training pitch.
And that drew an unexpected answer from the Catalan, who said: “No. It's the players, they play. They are the talents.
“The message is that we should cancel the press conferences with the managers. It would be much better.
“We leave the players to play. What we are doing here is nothing, we should avoid it.
“I make my statement to the federation, to think about it, to make, for example, three or four months with no press conferences.
“Just watch how the players play and write and talk about what you see. Sometimes I have to come here to explain what everybody has watched – why do I have to explain what everybody has watched?
“It's on the pitch, football is what happens. All of you give too much credit to the managers – give it to the players, you have to pay attention to that.”
As a football purist, it is easy to see why Guardiola feels that way, but the fact is that press conference and media interviews are such a big part of the theatre which is modern football that it is unthinkable to ditch them.
Football is wonderful to watch and discuss, but it is the bust-ups and barbs that really get everyone going – if you don't believe it, check out the social media reaction to Antonio Conte's reaction to Jose Mourinho's snipe last week.
And, to be honest, the way rival managers have been grouching and snapping at each other, and appearing petty and distracted, is to his advantage.
The hilarious slanging match between the bosses of Chelsea and United, currently scrapping over the right to cling onto City's coat-tails, is a vital part of the game.
The days when 60,000 people rocked up at the ground on Saturday at three o'clock, applauded a jolly good show and tootled off home talking about Stanley Matthews' ball control, have long gone. Sorry Pep.
Of course the football remains central, but the icy blasts and character assassinations, scraps and set-tos enrich the sport, and broaden its appeal. MuEN

GOLDEN BOLLOX
On this day 2014
The transfer window is eight days old. We've heard plenty of tales so far but what gossip can we bring you today...?
We'll start with the 'news' that City and Arsenal are said to be interested in Celtic defender, Virgil van Dijk.
According to Blair Esson of the Express: "Both clubs have sent scouts to monitor the impressive form of the Dutchman this season.
"The Hoops signed van Dijk for just £1.6m from Groningen last summer and have put him on a long deal.
"He is contracted to three more seasons with them, with an option for another year. The 22-year-old’s form has impressed Celtic manager Neil Lennon so much that he expects a call to come from Netherlands counterpart Louis van Gaal."
Moving on... the future of Joleon Lescott has once again made headlines but today, there seem to be contrasting stories flying around.
The interest in the defender has been one of the top tales in this transfer window so far but whilst some are suggesting that he could be on his way out, others are claiming that Manuel Pellegrini has no intention of letting him go.
Whilst the Manchester Evening News write: "Joleon Lescott’s Manchester City future is in the balance", the Sun argue: "Manuel Pellegrini has told West Ham to forget about signing Joleon Lescott any time soon."
According to Stuart Brennan of the MEN: "West Ham are hopeful that City will accept an offer to take the player on loan until the end of the season, paying his full wage of £100,000 a week, and have indicated that they have been negotiating with City.
"City will not let Lescott go unless they can bring in a replacement, but Manuel Pellegrini confirmed on Tuesday that the Blues have 'two or three' possibilities on the go.
"One of those is believed to be Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, but his £41.5million contract buy-out clause is a long way above City’s valuation."
The Mirror have also made comment, revealing that Fulham have now entered the group of interested parties, joining West Ham, Stoke, Besiktas, Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Elsewhere, the M.u.E.N are also reporting that City could yet capture the services of Nigerian starlet, Kelechi Iheanacho.
After it was reported on Friday that the youngster would be heading to Sporting Lisbon, it has been claimed now that City are back in the driving seat in the race to sign him.
Brennan writes: "The youngster, who was voted best player at the under-17 World Cup, which his country won in November, had also been lined up by Porto.
"But City made a decisive move for the player before Christmas, although reports in Spain that the player has already signed a deal are premature.
"Iheanacho is now in Barcelona, and City are believed to be wary because the deal has already been put in jeopardy by the demands of people around the youngster."
And finally, Goal.com are reporting that Fiorentina may be looking to take Stevan Jovetic back to Italy.
Ewan Roberts suggests: "Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella has refused to rule out a move to bring Manchester City's Stevan Jovetic back to the club in January.
"The Montenegro international joined the Etihad Stadium outfit during the summer, but has made just five appearances for the club in all competitions, netting just twice in the Capital One Cup against Wigan.
"With Viola top scorer Giuseppe Rossi sidelined for the next two months, the Serie A side are reportedly keen to reinforce their strikeforce in the winter window."
We'll have to see about that one...[/b]

Aguero fit to play Barca
Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be fit to play Barcelona in the Champions League.
Aguero has been missing since suffering a calf injury in December but Manuel Pellegrini told a Press conference that the Argentina international is expected back in the next few weeks.
Pellegrini was asked to put a date on Aguero’s return and replied: “during January,” declining to elaborate on a more specific return schedule.
It was originally feared Aguero could be absent for two months but Pellegrini confirmed the forward’s rehabilitation had gone extremely well.
“He is working, he is training. It is very good news,” Pellegrini said.
“All players recovering from injuries is good news, especially a player as important as Kun Aguero.”
Aguero had scored 19 goals in 20 games before he was hurt playing against Arsenal.
Barcelona travel to City in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg on February 18 with the return leg taking place on March 12.

Lescott future in balance as Mangala talk grows
Joleon Lescott’s Manchester City future is in the balance with West Ham believed to be interested, while Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be interested in Eliaquim Mangala.
Joleon Lescott’s Manchester City future is in the balance with an ever-lengthening queue of clubs wanting to sign the big defender this month.
West Ham are hopeful that City will accept an offer to take the player on loan until the end of the season, paying his full wage of £100,000 a week, and have indicated that they have been negotiating with City.
City will not let Lescott go unless they can bring in a replacement, but Manuel Pellegrini confirmed on Tuesday that the Blues have 'two or three' possibilities on the go.
One of those is believed to be Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, but his £41.5million contract buy-out clause is a long way above City’s valuation.
Pellegrini refused to be drawn on Lescott’s situation, but in terms of incoming transfers, he made it plain that any buy would be of top quality: “Of course if we bring a new player here to City it is because he is a very good player.
“In this squad, we have a high level to all the players so if we want to improve we must try to buy an important player.
“That is why it is not our first concern and we are not in a hurry to make a decision. We are just seeing two or three things, but nothing important.”
If the right replacement cannot be found, City feel Lescott is more valuable to them as a squad member to the end of the season, even if that means losing him for nothing in the summer.

City wait on Iheanacho work permit
Manchester City are on the verge of finally signing Nigerian Under-17 star Kelechi Iheanacho with the issuing of a work permit being the only stumbling block that could stop the deal finally going through.
The deal is thought to be worth around £900,000.
The youngster was also wanted by Porto and Sporting Lisbon, but before Christmas, City made a move although reports in Spain that the player has already signed a deal are premature.
Iheanacho is now in Barcelona training under the guidance of City officials waiting on his work permit before coming to England.
The forward was the standout performer at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in November, landing the Golden Ball with six goals as his Nigeria side stormed to the title.

So Griezmann wants £400,000 per week to play for the SCUM.

I thought everyone wanted to go to the Swamp, irrespective of money and how little they might be paid, just to be part of the heritage and history of the Old Trafford Red Sox ?? Does this mean, heaven forfend, that he's merely a mercenary ??

They'll, obviously, be daft enough/desperate enough to pay it but, at 26, isn't Griezmann a little bit young for their normal transfer profile ?? They normally seem to go for ageing 'has beens' around the 30 mark.
