Ilkay Gundogan scored in Manchester City's 4-3 defeat to Liverpool
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan remains confident their 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday is nothing more than a blip.
Liverpool took a 4-1 lead at Anfield after scoring three times in the space of nine minutes before late goals from Bernardo Silva and Gundogan set up an exciting finale to an enthralling contest.
Jurgen Klopp's side managed to hold on and inflict a first domestic defeat of the season on City but Germany international Gundogan insists they have the resilience required to put the Liverpool loss behind them and go on to win the Premier League.
"It is in our own hands. There is a gap, quite a comfortable gap still, but there are still a lot of games to play," he said.
"We need to learn now, especially from those 10 minutes when we were not fully there.
"I am quite sure that we will and then we are going to bounce back and find again, 100 per cent, our way. I am sure that it is then nearly impossible to stop us."
The game ran away from Pep Guardiola's team after Leroy Sane had equalised a ninth-minute effort from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the hosts.
Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all pounced on defensive mistakes to find the net in quick succession midway through the second half.
Mane also hit the post during that period as Liverpool, backed by a buoyant home crowd, took control in dramatic fashion.
Sergio Aguero twice threatened to equalise after Silva and Gundogan had reduced the deficit to one goal but Liverpool held on to secure the three points but despite the setback, former Borussia Dortmund player Gundogan remains upbeat.
"We had two situations with Sergio at the end but unfortunately that was not enough," he added.
"Our first defeat of the season - we need to accept that, even though it's not easy. But we will look forward and we will now focus on the next game [at home to Newcastle on Saturday].
"We have nearly one week to prepare for it. It continues and we won't stop."
Man City boss Pep Guardiola congratulated Liverpool on their 4-3 win over his side and insisted that they must now turn focus on their next game.
Gundogan's thoughts echo those of his manager, who had previously stated his side would not go through the season unbeaten, welcoming instead the opportunity to see how they reacted to a loss.
"He [Guardiola] always said the day would come where we lose a game," said Gundogan.
"Obviously everyone is disappointed because we don't think we deserved it. It feels kind of weird but the day has come and it is something we need to accept.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's Man City admission says it all about Pep Guardiola's side
Liverpool became the first Premier League side to defeat Manchester City this season
Jurgen Klopp claimed Liverpool had created history with victory over Manchester City - which sums up precisely what Pep Guardiola has built at the Etihad.
The five-times champions of Europe, on home soil, winning by a single goal against the Premier League leaders is “historical,” according to the German.
Yet when Mo Salah lifted a ball from 35 yards into Ederson’s open goal to make it 4-1, it was a pinch yourself moment.
City have yet to win at Anfield since coming under Abu Dhabi rule in 2008 - yet this had to be seen to be believed.
“Maybe it is historical day today,” said Klopp. “Maybe it is the only game they lose this season.
“They are just strong and really good, but I really think we deserved the win against a really good team.”
Klopp was right. Liverpool thoroughly deserved to become the first Premier League team to inflict defeat on the runaway leaders.
If anything, he was generous when suggesting the eventual 4-3 scoreline was fair reflection on a game Liverpool dominated - sending shockwaves through a City team that simply couldn’t live the famous Gegenpress, for which Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund were renowned.
“They deserved the tight result, but we could have won 4-1 as well,” he added. “We were really the deserved winner.
“It is good to know for us we can do it.”
It was a chastening day for Guardiola
It is good for English football, too - even if City fans leaving Merseyside on Sunday could be forgiven to failing to see the upside.
A 15-point lead at the top of table in January hardly makes for a thrilling title race.
As scintillating as City’s football has been, sport is nothing without competition - and competition is the one thing Guardiola’s side have lacked so far this season.
So much so that victory for one of the world’s established super powers feels like something of giant-killing.
But perhaps most important is the manner in which Liverpool achieved victory.
Klopp’s team played with the bravery Guardiola wishes all opponents would show.
They took the game to City - and on this occasion City couldn’t live with it.
It’s important to point out ‘on this occasion’ - let’s not forget the 5-0 scoreline in City’s favour at the Etihad earlier the campaign.
And that’s precisely what can happen when two sides embrace the notion of attack being the best form of defence.
It was fitting that such an approach ended City’s incredible unbeaten run.
Liverpool were rampant
Far more palatable than a ‘backs to the wall’ job - and it might just serve as inspiration to teams hoping to take City’s crown next season.
Of course there are not too many teams with the attacking resources of Liverpool on these shores.
Manchester United, certainly.
Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal too.
City suffered defeat for the first time in the league
“You have no alternatives to beat City,” said Klopp. “You could win the lottery, they tackle each other and then you can stand deep in your own box and hope nothing happens, but that it is not really likely.
“Being Liverpool we should not try this way. Then you don’t have a lot of alternatives, you have none.
“You need to be brave and you need to play football. The pressing in the second half, round the goals, was a different planet, just outstanding.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola reacts to Liverpool defeat
“What do you say? It’s a cool movie.
“City are brilliant, organised.
“There is no alternative to play against them and that is why we tried it again. I cannot make a match plan to avoid criticism after a game.
“I couldn’t be less interested in that. We wanted to win and the boys deserved it.”
Few could argue with that assessment and to his credit, Guardiola didn’t try to.
It was a performance after his own heart - and if more teams did likewise, the Premier League would be all the richer for it. (MuEN)

Liverpool fans adored what Kevin De Bruyne tweeted after Man City's 4-3 defeat
If you want football entertainment, watch Sunday's game between Liverpool and Manchester City on repeat.
The two attack-minded giants served up a real feast on Merseyside, with Jurgen Klopp's side running out 4-3 winners, ending Pep Guardiola's impressive unbeaten run in the Premier League.
At one point, Liverpool were 4-1 up on the league leaders, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all scoring in one of the craziest 10 minutes of football you'll ever see.
Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan scored late on to make it interesting, but Liverpool were just about able to see it over the line, extending their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions.
It was the first time this season that in a big game, City's Kevin De Bruyne wasn't running the show, with Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum doing a great job nullifying the Belgian.
And after the match, the superstar took to Twitter to post a truly classy message, praising both his own teammates and Liverpool.
DE BRUYNE DELIVERS SOME CLASS

It's posts like that which make the game all the better.
City were deservedly beaten, but De Bruyne is right to be proud of his colleagues.
Liverpool fans were understandably buoyant over the result, but also shared their appreciation for the Belgian's classy act.
The defeat an Anfield should do little to derail City's title charge with the Citizens still sitting 15 points ahead of Manchester United at the top of the table - although they do have a game in hand.
Leroy Sane - who scored one of the goals - believes that no one will remember the defeat come the end of the season.
"It must have been an incredible game for the fans, so many goals but for us it was not the best day," Sane told reporters.
"We show character in every game, we always try to score goals. We are disappointed to lose a game, it is a long time since we won here at Anfield.
"But at the end of the season, when we win the Premier League, nobody cares if we lost a game."

Is Liverpool defeat start of the rot for Man City?
Manchester City crumble at Anfield carried shades of that defeat at Leicester a year ago but the Blues response will be better this time
Pep Guardiola's philosophy stamped on Manchester City to such a successful extent this season, now faces its sternest test.
The Blues had sailed through the season serenely until they froze for 15 minutes at Anfield, and conceded three goals that looked hauntingly like those Leicester thrashed past them just over a year ago in a 4-2 defeat at the King Power Stadium.
On that occasion Claudio Bravo hit the nadir of his career, and his back four's confidence in him crumbled to dust – and John Stones had a miserable night of self-doubt and recrimination.
Pep Guardiola's grand vision of winning the Premier League with his brand of bold possession football looked to be in ruins and he was openly mocked for his assertion that he did not coach tackling.
But this moment feels different, much as it will pain the rest of the Premier League.
The Blues have too much belief in the bank to let a bad day on Merseyside blow away all the good work of the last five months.
Ederson's Anfield troubles were not as traumatic as those Claudio Bravo suffered at Leicester
Stones suffered, Ederson's dazzling footwork finally let him down and Nicolas Otamendi revisited the hesitant, laboured toiler who looked like his days were numbered a year ago.
City bounced back from the Leicester defeat to beat Watford and then Arsenal at home – and they now have Newcastle and West Brom in consecutive home games. Win them, and this unpleasant afternoon will be swiftly forgotten.
Big game hunter
Leroy Sane has already beaten his goals tally from his debut season, scoring his tenth of the campaign at Anfield.
But there has been a feeling that the exciting young German has gone a little flat in recent months, making Ilkay Gundogan's recent pronouncement, that he can be one of the best in the world, look a little distant.
But last season he scored big goals – against Arsenal home and away, against Spurs and in both legs against Monaco – while this year they have not been as consequential.
That is important for a player who aspires to be one of the natural successors to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to be the elite of football's next generation.
The sheer quality, and timing, of his goal at Anfield was a suggestion that he is back on track
No Silva no party
Ilkay Gundogan is a fine, top-class international player, one of the best of his generation in Germany.
His only problem, at the moment, is that he is not David Silva.
He has similar attributes and probably a higher work rate than the magical little Spaniard, and he could one day be just as influential.
But what he doesn't have is seven years of experience as the heartbeat of Manchester City, the sure knowledge that when he is on the field, the Blues will inevitably revolve around him.

He fits City like a comfortable pair of shoes, while Gundogan is the shiny new pair, stylish but still being broken in.
That was evident as City tried to build attacks in the first half – they kept breaking down in Silva's area of speciality, five to ten yards outside the penalty area (MuEN)

Manchester City 'lost control' against Liverpool in the Anfield atmosphere
Liverpool inflicted Manchester City's first defeat of the season against them
Pep Guardiola felt his all-conquering Manchester City team had lost control in the Anfield atmosphere as his champions-elect suffered their first Premier League defeat.
A breathless game saw Liverpool take a 4-1 lead midway through the second half but two late City goals saw the Reds happy to hear the final whistle from referee Andre Marriner for a 4-3 win.
Guardiola said the defeat may even benefit his team as they travel to other tough away fixtures in the later stages of the Champions League.
The Man City boss said: "My first words are congratulations to Liverpool for the victory.
"It was a good football game. they started well, we were not precise with the ball, we lost a lot of balls. Why? Because they were so aggressive without the ball and we had problems in controlling that.
"After that we started to play much, much better. We created chances even though we know how dangerous they are on the counter-attack.
"We started the second half really well for 10 or 15 minutes until the goal from Firmino.
"After that we lost a little bit of our control and were involved a little in the environment from Anfield for many reasons.
"In those moments you have to be try to be stable - it's a good lesson for the knock-out games in the Champions League.
"We were still fighting and trying, we found two goals and that's all.
"It's our first defeat, you need to live that kind of situation to realise what we have done so far."
Guardiola said he often hears questions about the league being over but said football was not that simple.
"Football is unpredictable. Of course you lose today against a fantastic team and you have to be sure to win the next one and fight until the end to win the Premier League.
"In the real world, it's acceptable, especially in that league with a lot of games, witha tough two months, with four competitions. It's so difficult to maintain it against top teams and not lose."
Guardiola said his team made mistakes in the atmosphere but preferred to give credit to Liverpool.
"Always I give credit to the opponent. Always we think about our own mistakes but maybe we can think that the other ones are good and they did it.
"It will be good for our future."
The Man City boss declined to answer questions about his pursuit of Alexis Sanchez apart from offering that he "is an Arsenal player".

Strawberry fillings forever? Klopp inquisitor takes the cake
Jurgen Klopp was basking in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Man City when his post-match news conference took an unusual turn towards sweet treats.
Liverpool might have handed Manchester City their just desserts at Anfield but Jurgen Klopp was caught out by a bizarre incident at his post-match news conference.
Goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool to a thrilling 4-3 triumph and inflicted a first Premier League defeat of the season upon leaders City.
A rousing Anfield atmosphere and Liverpool's stirring tactical approach were expected items on the agenda as Klopp faced the media afterwards, before events took an unusual turn.
"Jurgen, what's your favourite cake?" asked a man towards the back of the room, apparently not a usual member of the press corps.
"That's an interesting question," Klopp giggled in response. "Strawberry cake."
Seemingly unsatisfied, the intrepid inquisitor made the case for other cruelly overlooked sweet treats.
"What about a Cherry Bakewell? Manchester Tarts? Egg Custards?" he pleaded.
Klopp showed his customary tactical shrewdness by claiming his English was not good enough to extend the bakery banter.
It was certainly not the icing on Liverpool's exploits that anyone expected.

BOLLOX UPDATES
Man City holding Alexis Sanchez crunch talks with Manchester United waiting
Arsenal star's future is still up in the air with Manchester City prepared
Reports have suggested the Blues have already abandoned any chance if a deal in this transfer window - and that the Reds will pay the transfer and wage demands to land the Arsenal man.
But, while City are on the brink of pulling out, a meeting between chief executive Ferran Soriano, football director Txiki Begiristain and manager Pep Guardiola will finally determine what they do.
City had an agreement in place with Sanchez last summer, believed to be a deal worth around £275,000 a week, which would make 29-year-old Sanchez their biggest earner.
And they have told Arsenal they will not budge from paying £20million for a player who will be available for nothing in six months.
United are said to have expressed an interest several weeks ago, and be willing to meet Arsenal's £35million asking price, Sanchez's £400,000 a week wage demands, and a hefty agent's fee.
Sanchez has been desperate to play for Guardiola, but he is now thought to be even more desperate to get out of Arsenal this month - and would consider other options in order to do so.
Guardiola believes Sanchez could give City's Champions League campaign the extra firepower it needs, with Sergio Aguero poor against Liverpool yesterday and Gabriel Jesus out injured until next month.
But City are refusing to be held to ransom, especially with Sanchez's agent also making huge demands.
United's intentions remain unclear – they have said nothing on the matter, leading to some suspicion that the whole thing is a ruse cooked up by both Arsenal and Sanchez's agent to drive up the fee and wages.
The Reds face Stoke on Monday night and they were not expected to make a move for the player - who was left out of Arsenal's defeat to Bournemouth - ahead of the Old Trafford clash. (MuEN)

'Mourinho was slaughtered but got a point... am I going mad?'
Joey Barton hits out at praise for Man City display at Anfield
Joey Barton says he cannot understand the positive reaction to Manchester City's display against Liverpool.
City lost their unbeaten Premier League record in a thrilling match at Anfield on Sunday, going down 4-3, but earned plenty of plaudits for their attacking performance.
Barton, though, insists only the result matters and is amazed by the different reactions to Manchester United's goalless draw at Anfield earlier in the season and City's defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Jose Mourinho was widely criticised for his defensive approach against Liverpool in October's clash on Merseyside, despite United picking up a point.
"Mourinho comes to Anfield, parks the bus and gets absolutely slaughtered," said Barton.
"Then Guardiola goes there, passes out from the back, they are getting beat 4-1 but eventually score two consolations to get it back to 4-3 and everybody is praising them, going 'oh, brilliant for City, they tried to play, they never parked the bus'.
"I'm thinking 'have I gone mad here or is Man United's 0-0 draw and showing no adventure the better result?'
"In the modern era is it better to draw 0-0 and park the bus and be negative or is it better to be more offensive and get beat 4-3 because you get two late consolation goals?
"Maybe I'm a dying breed." (TalkShyte)

Guardiola confirms Delph out ‘for a while’
The injury leaves the team short at left-back
Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Fabian Delph is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee problem during Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
Delph was forced off after just 31 minutes and was replaced by Danilo but his injury leaves City short at left-back.
“He will be out for a while. It is his knee,” said Guardiola after the game.
“It’s different (to his previous injury). That was a muscular injury.”
With Benjamin Mendy still some months away from a return City are left with Danilo and Oleks Zinchenko as options at left-back.
The club have been linked with a move for a new defender in January with Faouzi Ghoulam and Ryan Bertrand among some of the names mentioned.

With comments that Scouseland legend Joey Barton has been making, about the praise City are receiving for not parking the bus at Klanfield, one can only surmise he's been eating too many vinegar sandwiches again.

On a different tack, when Mr Saturday Man, Wayne Bridge, was playing for City, it's just a pity that opposition wingers never suffered from Gephyrophobia.

The Liverpool wankfest in MSM ,has been nothing short of astonishing today. Rags connected outlets like ESPN have used words like “crushed” to describe our narrow 4-3 defeat, and 10 minutes of idiocy.

We win the League by 20 points. To Scousers It will be meaningless, because we lost to Liverpool meaning they are the best team in the country

It's understandable NB, but it's 3 points lost, as against 6 points so, unpalatable as it is, the Dippers defeat is preferable (well sort of).

We've just got to carry on with our holy quest to win the PL by the biggest points margin ever, as only that will wash away the sour taste of yesterday's defeat.
