Have been thinking the same thing in relation to who wins these awards. Truth is this is likely connected to the impact of modern football/the Internet.
Kaka was the last pure midfielder to win the award and that was 11 years ago.
No defenders ever really have a chance to win, but the same issue about the impact of goals is arguably why David Silva has had lack of recognition for his brilliance until of late.
Midfielders do win PFA POY more regularly in England, which may be cultural, yet part of that appears to also be due to a lack of high total goal scoring forwards having consistent seasons of late when their club performs well (Aguero's injury record, and our record or weak title defence even in season's we came in 2nd, I believe has caused him harm).
Salah is the first in a while that has. Other bias related factors (club's popularity, time of performance, club's form) are also likely having an impact.
