Fiorentina captain Davide Astori has died in his sleep hours before the match against Udinese.

Super weird.

Weird is that he was just 31. That is no age to die in your sleep when you are an athlete at this level.

Apologies for insentivity and cynicism, but when something like this happens to as pro athlete just turned 30, there can be only one explanation on my books:

I doubt the amount and frequency that would kill you would escape wada. Italian football drug testing is one of the highest in the world.

An awful day for football, both for players and fans alike. He must have been half decent to be the captain of a Serie A side and have more than a dozen Italian caps. RIP

Absolutely NB.

Serie A has been cancelled for today as a mark of respect, which is rather touching in its own way.

No idea if there was any truth in this, but looks like we were linked with him when Nastasic got injured

A pro athlete, although healthier, could also be more likely to suffer a heart attack in a way. Constantly pushing your physical boundaries can put a strain on you. Add the fact that pain killers and supplements are distributed like sweets and I'm not surprised there seems to be more and more deaths of healthy, young athletes

It must have been one hell of a dream.

Seriously though, indeed a tragic death, whatever the cause.

I read that he had a short illness. Can't fathom what short illness would lead to this but it's sad all around, I must say.

Thank you sir.
Had missed Your sensible Buckhingham Palace touch.
By means of encouragement for your always spotted pointed well researched and supremely expressed shows of simphaty... I'll restrain from engaging in confronting Your blzzare attempt to put on my professional litigant mouth words I never expressed nor meant, nor even try to draw your bizzare sense of historical perspective on how many waters have passed down the bridge of either English Football and MCFC skills when it comes to check up medical threats and prevention thereof.

Glad to get consistent evidence that no matter how happy days may come to this great Club, little bitter angry beings like you cannot just help but pouring down their hatred for anything remainding what epic fail they are.
