Premier League Winner's Medals

With five games left to play, I picked up on a comment from a Swansea fan in Cute Mancs view from thread.

A player has to have played (or part played/subbed) in five league games to actually receive a winner's medal.....

We have a few that currently don't make the grad
cut, will Pep sort this given there are still records to break?

Mendy: played only 4 to date (wow what impact he made in those!!!) he's nailed on for at least one game surely if not most/all?

Foden: has featured just 3 times in the League
Brahim: also featured in 3 league games
Tosin: 0 league games!

That leaves our friend Claudio Bravo with one league appearance.

So will those needing games to qualify, will Pep simply sub them on when we're winning, give starts to Foden and Brahim? Bring Bravo on in injury time assuming we're two goals clear?

The club get 40 medals to distribute as they see fit.

as much as it pains me to say FIBD is correct. Bravo wont hit 5 apps but he'll likely get a medal.

Seems a bit odd having the 5 game ruling and then the club can over ride it?

It's a bit daft alright, the first mention i can find of 40 medals goes back to the Govan Pisscan talking about it when the rags last won the league, so it's been that way quite a while.

You need to have played five Premier League games for the champions to be eligible for a winners' medal. However, City will be given 40 commemorative medals in total, so once those players who have qualified for a medal have received theirs, the club can decide which members of the coaching staff, officials and other players also receive one.

With five league games to go, here's a list of appearances made by Man City players this season:

Ederson - 33
Kevin De Bruyne - 33
Nicolas Otamendi - 32
Bernardo Silva - 31
Fernandinho - 30
Kyle Walker - 30
Raheem Sterling - 29
Leroy Sane - 28
David Silva - 27
Sergio Aguero - 25
Ilkay Gundogan - 25
Gabriel Jesus - 24
Danilo - 19
Fabian Delph - 18
John Stones - 16
Vincent Kompany - 15
Oleksandr Zinchenko - 7
Yaya Toure - 7
Aymeric Laporte - 5
Benjamin Mendy - 4
Brahim Diaz - 3
Phil Foden - 3
Claudio Bravo - 1

I think that list is incomplete - Mangala has 9 league appearances.

I’d throw one to Kolarov for being an absolute legend.

I think it's five appearances to be automatically eligible, and then the club distribute the remainder of the 40 as they see fit (remember Chappy got one a few seasons back). From what I understand, Mangala will automatically get one, as he's featured in over 5 games, but is currently on loan. Someone who was transferred out in Jan wouldn't be automatically eligible, though. However, I don't know what the case would be if someone was 'on loan with right to buy' who'd featured in 5+ games, but was subsequently sold without returning to the club.

I think Coutinho will get one for Liverpool if they win the Chumps League.

Amazingly, that seems to be true: http://www.skysports.com/football/news/ ... ners-medal

Although, when you think a bit more about it, he's ineligible for Barca in the competition, so it *kind of* makes sense in the world of UEFA. On the other hand, I doubt Liverpool would choose to give him a medal. Also, I don't know how much of that is media spin - I think, theoretically, like with the Prem, they *could* give the extra medals to anyone they see fit.

I wonder whether there'll ever be a situation where a player ever receives a Europa League and Champions' League medal in the same season? I suppose it's possible looking at this.

Bravo will get one of the automatic ones. Reserve keeper gets one as a rule. So now we only have Foden x 1 and Brahim x 2 that need to get the appearances in. Brahim must be injured, he would have been on the bench yesterday if not.

Discussing this in the pub at the weekend, we reached the conclusion that the rule is still in place because the Premier League only officially recognise those with 5 appearances as Premier League winners regardless of who does or doesn't get a medal.
