James McLain will not have poppy on shirt

Wow.

So James McClean hates Northern Ireland and that is why he plays for the Republic. He has managed to convey this fact to you - presumably via telepathy - and the fact that he hasn't gone public with this message is why you hate him?

It seems to me that there is so much that you hate. I feel sorry for you. Hate is a poison that only hurts the person who holds it. Let it go - or channel it where it will be beneficial... enjoy tomorrow blue. X

Who gives a fuck. I can't stand the bloke from what I see of him on the pitch but that doesn't make me think he shouldn't have the right to do his own thing.

Fair play to him.
I respect his opinion. It's funny how so many who say "lest we forget" also approve of war mongering. Thus demonstrating they have already forgotten!

It's the modern PC climate.

People very clearly did forget and on many occasions since Armistice Day.

I don't blame the twat; if I grew up as a Catholic in Derry I reckon I'd have an issue with/fight the British Forces instead of for them. Whilst the Poppy is broader than that, it has deep connections with the British Armed Forces. Here's to individual choices, even for cunts.

Modern phenomenon. The poppy seems to have become politicized during Blair's time in power. Whether it was before or after 9/11 and the subsequent invasions, I'm not sure (I'd guess the latter), but there was definitely 'poppy outrage' by 2004, which is the earliest I can remember it. Jon Snow wrote his 'Poppy Fascism' article in 2006, which is when it went mainstream.

McLean issued a statement a few years ago when at Wigan explaining his decision to not wear a poppy. Something along the lines of if it was just about the two world wars he would wear one............. I'm not condoning the man but wouldn't condemn him either, understanding his background. Edwin Starr had a good point.

I think this thread should be in the OT with all the rest of the political stuff.

For what it’s worth, I agree with Beefy.
You don’t have to like the bloke as a footballer. Let’s face it he’s a horrible player.
When he plays for us though (Ireland) he’s our horrible footballer.
One thing he isn’t, is cowardly.
He doesn’t hide. Certainly not in the face of adversity.
Some of you cnuts on here should at least respect that.

It would be far easier for him to wear a poppy but he has explained quite credibly why he won’t.
I would have no problem wearing one but I’m not from the Bogside in Derry.

You can’t say everyone has the right to make their own decisions and then condemn him. You can boo him, it’s your choice the same as you can boo UEFA or not. There’s quite convincing arguments for and against.

He’s a product of his environment but he stands by his convictions. He’s not pretending to be something he’s not.

As regarding choosing Rep of Ireland over Northern Ireland, I think you’ve got that one wrong as well Mase. Given his background I think it was always going to be his preferred option.
