this appalling treatment of which you speak - he is a 'soon to be pardoned' convicted spy after all and a cursory glance at his cv background would certainly raise eyebrows even among the most scrupulous of arms dealers. You have to ask yourself why, out of the hundreds of thousands of europeans studying and working in the UAE, they would just pick on this bloke.

Why indeed, in a country where we have military bases and considered a friend - seems to be an odd target to spy on. Even if he is guilty I find the solitary confinement and lack of consulate involvement questionable in terms of his treatment.

It's quite simple, considering the Arab Spring, that he is an enemy of the state, and no friend of ours.

No one ever seems to consider these people might be breaking the law. Greece is another place that takes a dim view of this and when I was a young (!) it was pretty well known you didn't take photos in Spanish or Italian airports shred with the military.
