As to VAR, it's very easy to say it helps to deliver correct decisions, but it absolutely is killing the essence of the game and no fans should have to go through the ecstasy/agony we all suffered this week. I'd be more tolerant of it if the discussions were made freely available to all, just like in rugby, but as it stands it is a tool that can be used to influence the outcome of a game. Sour grapes? Well Spurs fans would say so, but there is absolutely no way that if Barca scored that goal it would have been reviewed.

Furthermore, if getting more decisions right is the justification for VAR, then it might be nice if the referees started following the laws to the letter as well. In every game you will see countless fouls in penalty area jostling not given, and the amount of dissent that goes unpunished is farcical. (Law 12, dissent by word or action is a yellow card offence). Then what about simulation? Salah should have picked up at least a dozen yellows this season for diving. Simulation is also a straight yellow.

So we have a VAR system that determined the outcome of a massive game, because someone was offside by a few inches for a split second, but countless other offences go by the wayside due to inconsistent refereeing and a reluctance to enforce the very clear laws of the game.

Excellent post pal .

Nevermind City and VAR, poor Hammers clearly cheated out of a 3-1 status, when officials flag an offside. Shocking officiating.

I suppose , since the new rule to give handball irrespective of intention next season, means the rags will go back to their old tricks of flicking the ball up in the air onto your arm , since they can't dribble past players.

You are spot on with this Budfox. I was chatting to a ref yesterday, and the VAR may only access "official" camera views, despite whatever else may be available.

I noted that Dean didn't immediately give the penalty, having jumped all over any City challenge throughout the game. Then he remembered VAR and thought he'd better give it. He's a cheat.

To be fair to hime, he's just part of a bigger system.

Ok , it has just been proven that VAR got this decision totally wrong and also proves they haven't got a clue what they are doing . The blue line on the West Ham player should be vertical from his elbow not his shoulder therefore the horizontal blue line on the pitch further forward thus Sterling is clearly onside . Absolute fucking disgrace that a sublime goal not given for an utter arse of technology not used correctly = GAME IS FUCKED LADIES AND GENTS !

Whatever happened to the rule that there needs to be daylight between the attacker and the defender or was that just some shite that the commentators used to bang on about

Think that’s the edge of offside

The latter, never a part of the rules, some pundit said it and it was repeated.

What hasn’t been mentioned much and was glossed over very quickly during the match, was the offside given against Mahrez from Ederson’s clearance. He was level and the cameras and McManaman spotted it and said as much but not another word was said.

The point being I thought linesman were only supposed to flag when it was obvious as VAR would check if a goal resulted. This is where we will get the shitty end of the stick, the little decisions that don’t go to VAR but could have led to a breakaway or a chance or a goal. I notice that Norwich were dealt similar cards last night.

If the powers that be want us to suffer poor decisions like we have done for what seems like ages now, they will continue to do so, they will just have to be more subtle about it

When it happened on the US commentary they said that. "Linesmen have been told to keep their flags down on tight calls and it will then be reviewed by VAR. We've seen that not be the case in other matches already played" not sure whether the last bit was a dog at Liverpool but thankfully they said it how it is.

I said it on the official match thread and I'll say it again here.

VAR simply cannot be accurate to the degrees by which decisions are being made. The measurements being shown by the graphics on screen suggest a few millimeters, maybe a centimeter, as the basis for an onside/offside decision.

Here's the problem: The cameras being used for VAR decision are at most, recording super slomo at around 100 frames per second. In 1/100th of a second, at 20mph, a player moves around 10 cm. The blurry Razza freeze frame suggests to me a camera capturing just 25 frames per second (normal for pretty much every camera in use for broadcast). In that time Razza moves 40 cm, and at least 20cm if he's just jogging.

In other words, we have a system being used to give calls based on measurements it cannot possibly make reliably or accurately. There needs to be a margin of error built, based on the system lmitations, and that needs to favour the attacking team.

That is exactly what just happened in the spurs villa game. Kane was played through one on one, lineswoman kept her flag down and let the play develop, Kane fluffed the chance and then she put up her flag

This game seems to be being officiated for a Spurs win. Their fault that they haven't taken the offer up.
