Favourite Season

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Favourite Season

Postby Mase » Mon Apr 13, 2020 11:39 am

I know everyone will pick last season or the 100 season, but what’s your favourite season when we didn’t win anything, and why?

For me -

1997/98

I was 12 years old so I’d never seen City even half decent, so for me getting shit on a Monday morning from rags at school was normal and getting relegated didn’t make a difference on that front.

It was the season we introduced the new Kappa laser blue kit - my all time favourite kit. We also changed the badge.

My favourite player at the time was Jamie Pollock - at a time when the players weren’t technically gifted and we were crying out for players to just give a shit, Pollock used to run over to us in the Kippax once the players had come out of the tunnel and he’d run that sideline getting us all pumped up, waving his hands in the air and shouting. I’d never seen a captain for City do that before and I loved it!

Image

Favourite match was obviously the last game of the season. We won 5-2 but were relegated. I remember seeing our fans running from the Stoke end and diving in to the City end. I think that match showed us how much some of the players cared - and it was good to see.

I got to go to more away matches because we were in the same league as Stockport and Bury.

We were relegated on the last day of the season to Division 2, but that match against Stoke was brilliant and gave us hope for what was to come under Royle.

It’s my favourite season because even though we’d sunk so low, it reinforced that I was right to choose City over United because it didn’t matter if we won anything, it only mattered that I got to watch the boys in blue play every week.

Watching this video makes me realise I don’t actually care half as much about our current City team as I did back then..

Loved that season aswell. I remember going to Valley Parade on the final day after paying £15 for a standing ticket in the City end. When we came back into Victoria it went off badly with Utd who were waiting at shudehill the lower Turks head was smashed to shit and ended up shutting for years - happy days

It's between 90/91, like above I was 12 and really getting into it properly, Quinn and White was the best combination in football as far as I was concerned.

And 2000/01, winning the First Division doesn't count toward winning anything, does it? Loved watching us that season, pure attacking football.

I remember going to school and boasting that we were smashing every team by four or five, and a rag said to me “yeah but it’s the first division!” Told them I wasn’t arsed one bit, I absolutely loved it. Berkovic and Benarbia absolutely running riot!

And of course you had the Typical City on the last day of the season with Pearce missing the penalty to take him to 100 career goals

The 1980-81 season, my first as a season ticket holder. It had everything, and was a proper foretaste of the decades to come.

Starting with Big Mal, and my absolute belief in his rebuilding programme, despite the evidence of the previous season, based on nothing more than the memory of his glory days. Then the slide towards relegation and despair at Mal's departure, thinking we had nothing to look forward to, until 'John Bond. we love you', Bobby Mac, Tommy Hutch and Gerry Gow, and a surge up the table. Unjustly robbed in the League Cup semi-final when a perfectly good goal against Liverpool was disallowed for reasons that have never been explained. Then a run to the FA Cup final, beating Ipswich, by far the best team in the country at Villa Park and meeting Spuds at Wembley (when began my dislike of their fans and club). 1-1 draw on the Saturday with Tommy Hutchison scoring both goals, and defeat in the replay in the week, despite Steve McKenzie scoring a far better goal the Ricky Villa. That first season ticket in the Kippax was great value for money, even though we win nowt.

1st Division title was the best season of my life by far, have felt a bit detached from it all in recent years, but those years between 1999-2002 were mental. I think I went to pretty much every game, even the PL relegation campaign was amazing to see us start with Weah, Anelka - for some reason I'll never forget Paulo Wanchope's performance at Leeds away was magical etc.

Similar to some of the above, probably similar age to Mase. I could name every player at every club 97-2000.

But we were shit, I wasnt going to many games and we werent on tv much.

I'd say that Keegan one is up there but I didnt go.

First time I went to more games regularly was the last few at Maine road and that was special. Otherwise I guess I have to say the Mancini league win.. hard to pinpoint the others. The "craic " has gotten alot worse year on year. Maybe the season before the extension/ cheap seats in south tier 3, those few years before were the best in terms of banter based on where we managed to move to and the lads around us.

I remember being desperate for any kind of city coverage- late night itv taped highlights ( jason van blerk from far out vs forest ? Hammering oxford united away on a sunday televised game with the likes of kenaghan? A team with 3 Georgians and Frank Clark?)

The Sven season. At xmas I actually thought we could be a cl team. Double over scum and some cracking goals after a year without. Ended poorly I know, but the hope and fun was back.
Tracking back is overrated.

Me too by a country mile. Still gives me a warm feeling inside thinking about that first half of the season.
Maybe it was a reaction to sitting through the pure tedium that was Psycho's last stand, but I found it magical, something I hadn't felt about footy since I was a kid.
And I think I've said it before, the sun always seemed to be shining.

Pure magical half season.

I’ll have to go along with the Sven season, Elano and petrov playing football the like of which we’d not seen for years, Micah getting better and better, the hope that bojinov would miraculously get well and become a 30 goal a season striker, the twat who brought the “just like watching Brazil” balloons inadvertently causing an own goal - what a season (up to around feb!)

Are we talking about pigeonio?

If so, I'd say it was at the end of the psycho reign. I was there, in 110, so the pigeon was there right in front of me, although for the life of me, I can't remember who we were playing. All I remember was that it was second half and we were meant to be attacking that goal, and the fact that the pigeon managed to sit out most of the half on the corner of the six yard box tells you all you need to know about our attacking prowess, which is why I'm positive it wasn't the Sven season.
Mind you, it was pure release from the tedium that was the football at that time, and quite a few songs were composed that afternoon.

Seeing we're playing Villa in that clip, it makes it the second to last home game of the 2006/7 season That game was played on 28 April 2007 and we lost 2-0.

Which makes the Middlesborough game about a year later.

2016 was when it was posted on youtube, not when it happened

I’m guessing they have the dates wrong.
