Usually that is the ploy but I think he has backed himself into a corner that can only result in him leaving.

He doesn't need the pay day unless it is going to be an absolutely crazy offer and even at that he won't win anything for the next few years.

I think he sees that Barca are possibly going into a bit of a transition that could take 3-5 years. If he gets out now and Barca win nothing for the next few years it will be because Messi left and it will cement his status. This is pretty much where I stand on this. The plus of signing Messi would be incredible extra commercial growth which could fund a blow away signing and possibly a lure for other talent - Mbappe springs to mind would he play alongside him for one season?
