indeed it does make for grim reading.
the idea that the world was a far safer place 30/40/50 years + ago didn’t apply to children...

Makes you wonder how this kind of thing doesn't come out sooner but sadly as per Saville, stuff gets covered up.

When I started in catering as a young pot wash at 13 in a local pub, the chef at the time was a right creepy cunt who would rub himself up on me as he passed. Never nothing more sinister than that thank god but totally wrong. I once asked the Manager to make him stop and was told 'it never happened' and 'a pot washer is nothing and id be sacked if I told me Dad'. This was the late 80's and evidently nothing on this scale.

Thank god nowadays there are so many more safe guards in place to lessen his sick shit repeating itself.

I think there’ll be loads of abuse stories with Ferguson. Not sexual abuse, but if he’s not leathered a kid about I’ll be very surprised. Everyone saw what happened to Beckham as a grown man.

Heard that he turned up to watch Phil Neville playing cricket and would not leave before he had agreed to stop the cricket and take up with footy

Corrected for you .

Has Beckham grown up ? has he reached puberty yet ?

I’ve heard stories about him tearing his son a new one in front of everyone. To the point Darren was on the verge of tears.

Whilst I think that what the current Cityownwers have and are doing now is the right thing and very creditable, I don't understand why ourcurrent owners considered it was necessary issue an apology alongside the practical things they have done.

The practical things that City are doing regarding the victims is good and humane, but why should the current owners apologise for the inadequacies of whoever controlled City during the years that these horrific events happened?

The current owners are free of any guilt and played no part in any of it. It was not their negligences that ignored or failed to take the necessary action at that time.

Current action is necessary, but an apology from the innocent is surely not.

I think it's more apologizing on behalf of the company/club than themselves, which, in my opinion, is the right thing to do. Also, it's not just the owners/BoD where failures and shortcomings happened, but all the way from the top down, with some people who could be seen to shoulder some of the blame possibly even still being employed by the club in some capacity.

With the apology and actions, the club are trying to make reparations in as far-reaching a manner as possible. In this respect, one of the 3 names mentioned is interesting - Bill Toner. It seems he had nothing whatsoever to do with the club, but pretended he did to groom a victim: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-44902753. Unless new info has come to light since he was jailed, the fact the club are mentioning him and including his actions in their statement suggests they're doing everything possible to a) highlight what happened, and b) draw a line under all historic cases.

The club are on the front foot with this and have been since hiring the QC . Fair play, it's an attempt to show that they recognise past failings and have protocols in place in an attempt to stop any recurrences
Will it stop the gutter press from slinging mud, will it fuck.
Agree with John in that the current BoD have taken it upon themselves to apologise on behalf of previous incumbents and I don't think that they needed to however they have done so and i can understand that it is their attempt to draw the matter to a close

Agree with all that in terms of doing what's right. Moving beyond what's right though, when you buy a company you buy their liabilities - some of which you may not see for many years down the line. Ultimately even with something that happened 30-40 years ago, there is a huge amount at stake today. Firstly the owner must protect the brand that has been built against a very attack-minded media who will go for the club at the slightest slip-up.

Secondly and most importantly we are in the hunt for the best young talent on the planet. Parents make many decisions on emotions, and an easy low blow other clubs would otherwise use in negotiations is that the current owners had no contrition or compassion. The amount of money spent on the investigation, how seriously the club has taken the matter, and how professionally it has been handled, shows that the club are in incredibly capable hands from a strategic perspective - they couldn't allow anything to detract from the academy as a central pillar of the club's future plans.

On a personal level, I'm horrified at the whole thing, it's nice to see all the clubs involved finally after all these years taking it seriously. So many lives ruined. Very sad.

yes, it's a symbolic thing in the same way as the Irish government apologised rercently for the abuses in the mother and baby homes in years gone by. It was an apology on behalf of the state for its previous failings

Sparty,
I agree with all you say Mate and I agree that City have to protect the brand too.

But, maybe it's because I'm old but it seems to be something that is a new thing...apologising for the faults of other people.
I agree that City should do what they are doing and am proud that they have done so, but by apologising for something that is not their crime, I feel that they also attach themselves to those crimes.

A hateful media could make mileage out of this, "If you're not involved, what you saying sorry for?
