Vaguely remember watching it on the box as a kid ; watched a replay of it a couple of months back and noticed what an absolute peat-bog the Wembley pitch was - worse state than the swamp ! ; did it rain heavily the week before ?

The Horse of the Yaer Show at Wembley that ruined the pitch was12 months later justbefore the City v West Brom League Cup Final.
The pitch described by Mercer as a cabbage patch.

Yes plus pitches were generally shit in those days anyway. Younger viewers can view film of the Baseball Ground.

The playing surface at Wembley was always regarded as one of the best, if not the best, in the World. Whether it deserved that reputation or not I don't know, but the quality of the turf was often given as the reason that so many players started to cramp up towards the end of games.
How that compares to modern pitches that have the advantage of more modern turf technology, I don't know.

I visited the old baseball ground that was considered amongst the worst of playing surfaces. It was atrocious. After a period of wet weather, it was more conducive to bog snorkling than football.

I was there in 77 when they were 3-0 up against us and they got a pen and had to paint the penalty spot as Big Joe was trying to pace the yards to the spot and put the ball further back. They scored and we lost 4-0.
