PL and CL odds - unrealistic?

Postby Dimples » Tue Sep 14, 2021 1:41 pm

I have supported City since the 60s so maybe I carry a lot of baggage and negativity.
But I think the current odds on City to win the PL and CL are silly. We are favorites for both with very low odds. In the PL we are clear favs despite having no center forward. Chelsea are a distant second.
Our CL record is terrible, etc...

Do people think the odds are realistic?

PL: City 1/1, Chelsea 13/5, Liverpool 5/1, Rags 7/1

CL: City and PSG 7/2 favs, Munich 7/1, Chelsea 15/2,
Liverpool 9/1, Rags 12/1, Real 14/1

Evens versus 13/5 for the chavs, that cant be right.
I would have thought us and chavs are neck and neck for PL, we might have the slight edge but not that much.

Odds these days - what with online betting and the opportunity to shop around for the best odds - are just as much a reflection of what people are betting on as they are actual calculated probability. If loads of people have put money on us to win, our odds will have shortened considerably. Conversely, Chelsea's odds may have lengthened to encourage more people to bet on them, so the bookies can cover their losses with those who've taken a punt on Chelsea in the event we do win the PL.

Munich at 7s looks a tasty shout. And if the dippers are 5s to win it then money on a top 2 finish must be also decent

Dippers will finish ahead of chelsea. Whoever finishes ahead of dippers will win league.

Every year we are faves for cl…i have no idea why. I would lay us all day long…

Bookies odds don’t reflect the chance of a team winning, it’s more to do with how much money has been placed on an individual team and where they need to offset it to ensure they make the best profit.

There’s no guarantee but we’ve been favourites in the CL for a few seasons and looking at those odds, this early, the bookies have done their analysis with the probabilities of one of us or PSG weighing heavy on their mind.

13/5 does look askew. I would have had us both neck and neck.

I wonder if the loss of Salah and Mane to the Afcon affecting dippers and the world club games affecting Chavs is factored into those odds.

It's completely what BiB and Beefy said. The odds are calculated by money laid on and against the runners and the bookies ensuring they will be able to profit overall.
Nothing at all to do with the opinions of people setting the odds. It's always been this way, it's called making a book, hence the name, bookies.
And nowadays, I'd imagine there's no human intervention, I should think all the money laid goes straight into the computer, and odds come out the other end.

Not quite PB. The bookies create the odds initially based on their opinion of the % chances of results. Then when money comes in the books are balanced against the potential payout.

Of course there has to be an initial show of odds, but that's it as far as opinions go.
