Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!
by nottsblue » Sun Jan 09, 2022 12:22 pm
A thread to put all things related to this competition if anyone is interested
We only have Mahrez out there to keep an eye on. But there may be some decent games to comment on.
One thing of note is the organisers have decreed that covid won't affect games. Teams will either play or forfeit games

Ian Wright was very verbal in saying the tournament doesn't get the respect it deserves, barely covered in the media etc....
Sly, are showing all 52 games live from what I gather, but imo it's no different to the Asia cup (also 24 team tournament) the quality will be like watching league 2 here if that (in most games) I won't be tuning any time soon to with the likes of today's 2 games......
Cameroon vs Burkina Faso followed by Ethiopia vs Cape Verde.
The semis and the final might just about be a reasonable level to warrant a watch.
Maybe I'm wrong but, I won't be giving up the hours today to be convinced otherwise

Agree with most of that. Some of the 2017 AFCON games were getting League of Wales attendances (with atmosphere affecting the TV viewing experience almost as much as the quality of football on show, imho), and the organization seems to be a complete mess for most tournaments. Added to that, it's in the middle of the domestic football season, so what would get dropped from newspaper pages or news reports to make way for it? Lower league football, no doubt.

I loved this competition, but no broadcasters here because of ratings, but I swear it's comedy gold.
Some games are close to non-league.

Ian wright jumps on the “racist” bandwagon at any given moment especially when a chunk of society doesn’t follow his narrative -
He turns everything into a racial issue .
Fucking pleb .
THEY SAY SWEARING IS DUE TO A LIMITED VOCABULARY. I KNOW THOUSANDS OF WORDS, BUT I STILL PREFER "FUCK OFF" TO "GO AWAY"

Scratch that:
Countries suffering Covid outbreaks will have to play their Africa Cup of Nations matches even if they have only 11 players available.
New guidelines from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) state matches will still go ahead even if none of the 11 players is a goalkeeper.

Comoros sounds like a place in a Marvel film.

That’s what these tournaments are good for. I had never heard of Andorra (not sure if that’s even a country) until they started playing in Euro comps.

I think I was encouraged to learn more about countries of the world by "FIFA Road to World Cup 98" than by any book or class.

I always played as St Kitts & Nevis. One of their players (Gumbs, but can't remember his first name) ended up on trial at Oldham, and was mentioned in the matchday program once when we played them. Still keep an eye out for their results sometimes.

Same, remember getting a big grade out of nowhere at Geography in the first week of the 9th grade. She stared asking about European capitals and I answered and she end up asking all of them. She was impressed, but she had no idea I knew them from playing football video games in the 90s and watching everything I could get on.
I became her favorite after that, even if I was a lazy bastard.

I always used to play as Liberia on international superstar soccer 98 & try to win the World Cup on hardest mode starting with qualifiers. A squad full of absolute shite plus George Weah who was maybe the best player in the game. There was no save option so had to be done in one 4+ hour sitting - got to the final once but never won. Still hurts 25 years later
