Contracts

Who at the club deals with player contracts?

Just wondering why, with already one of the smallest squads in the league, we’ve let Sterling, Mahrez, Gundogan, Jesus run their contracts down to only a year left? Sterling and Jesus especially as they know they’ll hold the power now when we try and negotiate.

Surely if they aren’t in our plans we should have sold when their value was high and replaced them?

There’s a good £80m in potential transfer fees there! That’s more than Haaland’s buy out clause!!

On the whole the club is ran exceptionally, but stuff like this is ridiculous.

I'd say in the main that we don't look to sell players. We seem to believe that they will stay with us and the length of the original contract backs that up. That is our model but the issue with that is it does not take into account loss of form and can breed complacency.

Gundogan and Mahrez situations explained by their age I suppose. No club likes long contracts for the 30 plus brigade unless they’re defenders who last longer. I think the Club have dithered about Jesus and Sterling. Are they part of the long term future or not? Their form is very up and down. I guess one of them will leave as Alvarez and presumably Haaland arrive.

It’s very naive. Pep has already said “anyone that wants to leave can leave” and we’ve had Sanè, Garcia and Torres in the last few years that have said they’re off. Weird that they wouldn’t expect players to do this, when one of our best players wants to leave.

Mahrez has been arguably our best player this season and we’ve let him run down his contract. Hopefully we can get him to extend another year or two.

Mahrez has scored a decent number of goals this season and he chips in with assists; that marvellous assist for Kevin in the first Real match springs to mind. Still he can play pretty crap for long periods in matches as he did on Wednesday until he scored. I agree he should get another year.

Agreed. He can be quiet and then just score a screamer from absolutely nothing - which I think we definitely need when we’re struggling against teams with 11 behind the ball. Hopefully he signs for another year like you say, and then Palmer can take over.

Cole Palmer looks as though he will make the grade as a City regular but you’d think Jesus or Sterling has to move on to make that possible. What of Lavia if we buy a youngish top defensive midfielder? Or Egan-Riley if we buy a young left back as a lot of people want. Or McAtee if we buy a replacement for De Bruyne in due course. Can’t see the Club turning away from an insistence on regular trophy wins so youngsters have to improve rapidly if they’re to make the grade here. Most will have careers, maybe very good careers, elsewhere.
