Our Defence Yesterday v Newcastle Oil Club

Big concern yesterday for a number of reasons.
1, Stones makes one of his rare appearances and has a bit of a shocker . He always makes one serious mistake per game usually against teams with pace . His defending is good but his passing is probably the worst of all our defenders and it affects our build up play from the back . Stones first game in a good while so we have to give him some slack .
2, Kyle Walker had an absolute mare in the first half but was pulled out of position so many times in was untrue . Partly down to Stones bad passing and positioning and lack of game time but has Walker lost a yard of pace ?
3, Cancelo totally ineffective as he usually is against teams with pace , probably his worst game for city yesterday.
4, Rodri also had a stinker in the first half but was his usual brilliant self 2nd half . First half Stones just didn’t feed the right ball into Rodri basically because Stones can’t pass ( except backwards and bit sideways) so Rodri became exposed .
5, Ruben Dias did well I thought and was magnificent 2nd half and also got forward a lot getting an assist I think ?
6, Ederson was exposed so many times by shite defending it was unreal but had a decent game in general imho .
7, We miss Laporte, Dias and Laporte at cb is vital to our success. They both can pass the ball out quickly and move forward with the ball when needed something Stones just can’t do and has never done .

Agree totally re Stones, Laporte and Dias.
I don't think Walker has lost any pace, he was trying to play like Cancelo and it didn't suit him. Positionally he was all over the place.
I thought Rodri was better last 20 minutes but that's because they were desperate to hang on to the point then and weren't attacking as much- he was awful up to then.
I don't think Ederson can be blamed at all yesterday.

Yeah our style and technical approach relies on our defenders to pass the ball out quickly either into and through the midfield or out wide and down the flanks . We did neither effectively yesterday with Stones on the pitch . This is the main reason he hardly gets any game time imho.

You’ve just given a breakdown of our performance. Why couldn’t this go in the match thread?

It’s a technical breakdown of where and why Newcastle exposed us yesterday . We have always been vulnerable against teams with pace and it is a huge issue when we haven’t got the right defenders on the pitch .
We can come back to this thread on Saturday v Palace as they have a bit of pace !

Fair enough. Agree on all points in the main post.

Luckily got us Walker rarely has two poor games back to back. Stones….he’s a worry.

Is the 'Oil Club' reference tongue in cheek?
