Just looked up the Euro 96 squad, and you're right: it might be my age and the fever around hosting the tournament, but pretty much every player in the squad was a household name (with the possible exception of Howey and Stone). I'd always thought that 02-06 were the 'peak' years for England - that's probably to do with the media fawning over Beckham and Gerrard.
