PELE the greatest

Postby Indianablue » Mon Dec 26, 2022 5:11 pm

Time is rapidly running out for Pele. For me, since seeing him in the mid 60's he quite simply was the greatest footballer ever without question. There have been others since, Best, Cruyff, Maradona, Messi, Puskas, the list is fairly long of also rans, even Ronaldo but none in my personal opinion could lace his Puma boots.
May his God go with him, thank you for making me fall in love with the game

He was before my time, just, but I would have loved to see him play in the modern game with better pitches, conditions, facilities, medicine, nutrition science etc. From the older sketchy footage he looked brilliant.

1970 will forever stay with me for Pele and that unbelievable Brazilian team. Pure joy. Class act from every perspective.
As Pele was slightly before my time, Maradona is my number one for WC 1986 and what he did with Naples.
In 1972 I saw Pele and Santos play. Money making tour. Very disappointing match as Santos and Pele just went through the motions. However, It was still a great thrill to see him play live. A childhood highlight.

1970 was THE World Cup final for me and i was it on our fairly new rental colour TV. I've since watched it a couple of times on Youtube, theres some great games available.

The greatest for me was/is Maradona, I watched that really long documentary about him and it showed clips of him growing up and some of the things he could do time and time again were astounding, I’d like to see more of Pele, I remember the 1970 final and how brilliant Brazil were.

Read a while back that if you ask older brazilians, they will tell you that Pele was great, but Garrincha was better.
People came to see the footballer who invented dribbling

I am on the side that thinks a squad of footballers from 50s-99 will crush a squad of footballers from 2000 until today.
Many of them became legends playing in dirt.

I honestly doubt such a game would last 45 minutes. If you had a ref from back then, the 2000- players would all be injured, and if you had a ref from today, the 50s-99 players would all be sent off.

a modern day team would destroy an old one - it wouldn’t even be a contest. double figures at least.

the rag team from the early / mid 90s would struggle in the championship today

You honestly reckon so? I think there's too many factors you need to consider to give a definitive answer. Yes, players are more skilled and fitter, and tactics are more refined. But players are also nowhere near as tough or versatile, and are too fine-tuned to be able to cope with balls, boots and pitch conditions of yesteryear, or the physicality.

Agree. The game is so much more technical now. The whack it to the wings and launch it in that United did in the 90s wouldn’t work now

Tactical yes, i agree, however I am talking pure football, no recovery, most of all no dodgy juices. Just raw talent vs raw talent.
