Testimonials

The Kev thread got me thinking about this. He's our longest-serving senior player, but Foden's been at the club longest. I don't know whether Kev will make it to his 10-year anniversary; I'd put it at 50-50 (and it would require a contract renewal/extension).

When would Foden actually be eligible for a testimonial? Would it be 10 seasons after his first professional appearance (i.e. 2027/28), or first appearance in a matchday squad (i.e. 2026/27)? Either way, mid-20s is pretty young for a testimonial.

The only other player that is pretty likely to get a testimonial this decade is Ederson, in my opinion.

So, which of those three are likely to get one, and who do you reckon we'd be likely to face for them?

Not a fan of testimonials for multi-millionaires. Back in the day a player got 500 quid a week and when his career was over age thirty, he had a testimonial to give him a few quid for booze for the next 2 or 3 years. From there he either sank or swum.

Not relevant these days, for me.

I'm a fan of them as a send-off (for players who've served a minimum of 10 years and are leaving/retiring, or who've made a major contribution to the club and are retiring or leaving for a non-rival, like Fernandinho), but I agree the financial side is unnecessary these days. I also think they shouldn't be played during the season, like Kompany's was, although I understand it might be harder to attract players to play a non-competitive game in the close season these days, and the stadium often has all kinds of repairs and events going on during that period, too.

Kompany donated the money from his to a Manchester homeless charity.

And sergio? Id like to see both come back for a send off. Money to charity. Kick around between them all. Not arsed on opposition.

I know the story about why Weaver didn’t get a testimonial, but I’d love for him to have one.

Kun was running around with messi on his shoulders after the world Cup final.
I think he could manage to stroll about in a friendly charity testimonial.

The biggest problem with testimonials is the attendance isn't what the player deserves.

That really surprised me with the World Cup. A friend of mine was blinded in one eye playing rugby, and, due to insurance issues, he wasn't allowed to perform any rugby-related activities up until a certain age (maybe 35), even coaching little kids. I'd have thought Aguero would have been in a similar situation (and I believe that's what stopped Usain Bolt from fulfilling his dream of becoming a footballer, too).
