Our Recruitment

Postby PeterParker » Wed Nov 26, 2025 8:39 am

Had a debate on the other thread with KinkyKinkladze about this, who do you think it is responsbile for our recruitment? Pep or the board?

I am on Pep, I think he has the final say, but I also think that some of the targets he wanted ended up in different places: Wirtz, Bellengham.

What I don't understand as much is the youth intake we have. It seems that we kept players that are not good enough: Rico, Bobb (Mcatee last season), but we let Palmer go and did not see the potential in Rodgers or Olise.
I think exactly those three are the players we are missing at the moment.

So, what do you reckon and how can we fix this?

Absolutely no way do the club sign anyone without Pep's final say. To think otherwise would be crazy.

From what I understand Pep identifies the positions needing signed and then the recruitment team return with a shortlist and between them they prioritise the players and then recruitment try to get target A, then B etc. So in summary Pep has a say in recruitment but not the overall say, however, I'm sure if he identifies an individual player that he wants then he informs the recruitment team. I'm sure this is why we have Nunes in the squad as Pep loved him when we played Sporting.

Exactly - Nunes was mentioned by Pep publicly two seasons before he came to us. Nico G's dad worked for Pep, clear we were tracking him for years.

It's evident that Pep has the final say, most of the time.

Who's to say these three would have excelled under Pep's recent boring slow pass to death football had they stayed?

The director of football surely has the final say.

Anyway whoever is responsible, its been average at best.

Just look briefly at the players gone KDB, Silva, Sane, Sterling, Mahrez, Sergio, Fern, Walker, Vinny etc etc There are not too many of the new recruits in that quality band yet.
A big part of the problem is we didn't evolve as a team by adding 2 or 3 world class players every summer (net spend trophies and all that bullshit) Which left us with too much to do in too short a time, squad wise.

Driving to the game last night the debate on TS was " are Chelsea better without Palmer"

Looking at Chelsea for a moment.

They sign a "wonderkid" from South America in Estevao and they play him. And it turns out, he's actually half decent

We sign a "wonderkid" in Echeverri, who by the way was scoring goals and running games in the Copa Libertadores, and we loan him out to Leverkusen. Who don't play him. Maybe because of a change of manager. Maybe not.

What sort of message does that send for future recruitment of young talent? It's isn't a great one.

We laughed at Chelsea paying £56million for cucurella although he’s a cunt he’s better than what we’ve purchased in last 3 years

I had a conversation about this yesterday. We have no fight, not on the pitch but in the transfer market.

Semenyo has been lighting up the league and any big 6 club who isn't in for him in January is just fucking up. Might be that he isn't needed for some, exceed a price point for others, but you get in the fucking ring before the bell and size the guy up.

Are City in for him? Fuck no. And even if we were, Liverpool start sniffing around with any sort of genuine interest and we tuck tail and run so quickly it's embarrassing. This was all well and good when we were picking up players from Europa level teams with a massive income disparity. But now teams can hold out for £70M+ and they'll be no shortage of suitors. And even when we did pay over the odds and splash the cash on Jackie, no-one else was in for him...WTF was that about? Free market says the product is worth what the BUYER is willing to bear. Pay over the odds on a player where you have to or someone else will, tell Villa they can have £65M or keep him. And for the love of god, stop being pussies in the transfer market.

I think Kerkez is better than Ait Nouri.
We've seen Nouri so many years at Wolves, never looked like a City player for me.

I dont think the people that run out club understand we should steer clear of signing players from Wolves.

Agree that we missed out on Kerkez over Ait Nouri. Better player imo. We've seen fuckall of Ait-Nouri yet. I'm hopeful there's a player in there, we've seen that at Wolves but O'Reilly has the shirt and should keep it at present

The club lost it's way for a few years for sure, and it's hard to understand why this happened - I suspect too much power was ceded to Pep, but something changed in the middle of last year, and long term, that slump we had from October onwards may have been the kick up the arse the club needed to get its mojo back. For example starting to realise that one day the club will not have Pep, and the club must continue.

What's particularly interesting, is that the club bought players who it seems Pep perhaps was not totally in favour of, but also grew some bollocks and took decisive action on Kev, Gundo, Ederson etc. Similarly though, it wouldn't surprise me if there were players Guardiola wanted who for whatever reason we either didn't go for, or were unable to close a deal.

We have to remember in amongst the doom and gloom of losing the recent games, the squad is now insanely young, and old-heads like Rodri, Kova etc are still missing, and while there are some like Savinho and Bobb who are struggling, even they are young and maybe a Doku like emergence is just round the corner for some of these playters as Pep explores this brave new world of attacking direct football.

I'm pleased overall with our direction in the last 10-11 months in the transfer market, 8 out of 10

Wharton and Guehi are two we should be looking at, if we can offload savinho then hopefully a good window at Christmas will set us up for the run in

Be interesting if we went for Wharton or Elliott. Would say we are looking at Rodders and thinking he's done. Where that would leave Nico G fuck knows.
We fucking MUST get a right back either January or summer but summer will be WC so do it early. Nunes, although vastly improved is not the answer.

If it's Elliot I think it's more of Bernardo's replacement. A lot of running and keeping the ball, the link between midfield and attack.

We don't need Wharton - Nico G is better.
