And Maguire and Shaw.
Let's call it like it is.

If we're calling it like it is then it's mainly Stones and Pickford as they're the only ones who've played in them all.

Shaw's been excellent even though he's a dirty fat rag.

I think the term excellent is OTT. He’s been solid and hasn’t done much wrong. But look at the teams that England have played. You’d expect England’s defence to cope with them.

Maguire has played two matches and hasn’t had anything whatsoever to do. He missed a sitter last night where he couldn’t even get the header on target. He’s played no better than Mings.

Thought Stones was easily our best defender last night, was getting really good blocks in and his passing was spot on.

Didn't he get an assist the other day?

But credit where it is due. His tactics beat Germany. Could easily win this competition. But long term England are fcuked.

Southgate is one game (against a knackered Ukraine) away from taking England to the semi-final of a third tournament. No England manager has ever done that.

He's the first England manager to win a game beyond a quarter final since Alf Ramsey in 1968.

If he gets to the final (which nobody sane would bet against), it'll be England's first since 1966.

Southgate has taken England from being the kind of team that beats Moldova and San Marino 8-0 and loses to Germany 1-0 to the kind that beats Moldova and San Marino 5-0 and beats Germany 1-0. I'm not saying he's a great manager, but he gets the job done more successfully than anyone that the FA has thrown tens of millions at over the past 20 years.

He is the Mourinho of international football

With the attacking riches at our disposal we could be like 1970 Brazil. Instead we are like Scotland under George Burley.
I think we have been spoiled to a certain degree by the talent on show in the PL and the superb football we see by a good number of teams week in week out.

As a fan base, do we want to see a win at all costs mentality with the path to this seemingly trodden by Southgate on the way to dour, turgid, defensive minded play? Or do we want to try and win the thing with a bit of style, panache, swagger which are the attributes that us and to a large extent the dippers have shown over the last five years?

Personally I am in the latter camp, but I am not a huge lover of international football. Maybe those fans who are more invested in it want success more?

0-0 against Scotland (at home, 2DMs, 1 shot on target, etc...) tells you all you need to know about Southgate.
A mis-match like that should be a turkey shoot for England (no disrespect meant to Scotland).

Imagine the way England would play and how good they would be if they had a top manager like Pep or Klopp.
Then weep if you are English because Southgate is going nowhere.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. He drew 0-0 with Scotland in a virtually meaningless game after beating the World Cup runners-up (because anything except a defeat would have seen England qualify for the next round), topped the group, and went on to then beat Germany in a tournament for the first time in 55 years.

Some people would prefer the team to whip Scotland 4-0 or 5-0 and 'pluckily' go out to Germany 2-1, it would seem.

We have had an awful lot of managers in the last 25 years who have had a wealth of talent at their disposal and played in a way that is far easier on the eye, but we still haven't reached a final in a major tournament for 55 years. Southgate might not get us to the final, but I'm damn sure Keegan wouldn't have managed it. He would have set that team up yesterday to go for the jugular and we would have been ripped a new one by those direct balls down the middle that our defensive set up just about coped with. I'm 43. I watched in 1990 and in 1996. We have just knocked Germany out of the European Championship. Jurgen Klinsmann took it well, but no way was he expecting that to happen.

We were heading for a draw at best until he brought someone on to create. I can't stand his 'clean sheet at All costs' brand of football because it imbalances the team, we can't leave it until the 70th minute against Italy or Belgium to bring the creators on or the game will already be lost.

This is where am i too. Fair play to him that he has his system and now will stick to it at all costs - the results justify it he will rightly say but it is negative, trying not to lose first and foremost rather than taking the game to the opposition. A decent team may score first and force his hand and then we will see what he can do.
Looking at the cimments on the beeb, it seems most are happy playing this way. I doubt there are many blues and scouse thinking like this but i can understand it

I just looked up how many teams have kept clean sheets in the tournament historically. Since the start of the current group stage > knockout rounds format in 1984, only 5 teams have in the group stage: Germany in '96, Germany and Poland in '16, and England and Italy in '20 ('21), with all of them conceding in their first knockout game except Germany in '16 and England this time round. Only one of the 3 has gone on to win the tournament thus far, though. It's interesting that 4 of the 5 GS clean sheets have come in the last 2 tournaments, though, with only 1 coming in the previous 8 (although, with 24 teams, it's statistically more likely that there'll be some keeping clean sheets). Same with that own goals statistic.

If we got rid of Southgate and put Bobby Manc in charge, I would pay good money to watch England.
