It used to be largely a side-hustle for (predominantly) Oxbridge graduates, but they 'diversified' their writers about 8 or 9 years ago (long after many other news outlets). Now it's a self-promotion tool for anyone with a new 'angle' and their own book, exhibition or documentary that they want to namedrop.

Simon Hattenstone is the writer of the article, a prime mover in the anti Arab/City cabal at the paper. The ship on both club badges is part of Manchester City Council coat of arms and represents Free Trade, as in the Manchester Liberal economic & political model created here by Bright and Cobden during the 1820s. It is no more a symbol of slavery than the sea itself.

An article in the Guardian has highlighted the association with ships, which played a crucial role in importation and the use of goods, largely made by slaves.
