Fact is we'll probably pay well over the odds for most if not all of our signings. Clubs will refuse to sell to us otherwise & if we want the players we'll just have to pay it.

It has the unfortunate knock on effect of ruining most of Manchester Utd's transfer plans as they can't get any 'value' in the market. I recon we can cock them up just by registering an interest in a player & not even bidding.

Pity.

how could we be so inconsiderate.

Was reading through Villatalk before our 'semi final' with them and not one person would've sold him for 25m. Reminded me of us and Stevie 12 months ago. It'll be knocked back.

Sorry, typing through PS3, I meant they'll keep knocking us back to (rightfully) placate the fans.

We should look abroad for a midfielder imho. 20m for James Milner... fuck me... reading some Villa forums and they want 25m+Ireland at the least... deluded crackheads.

Milner is still young in comparision yet has been a Premiership stalwart for as long as I can remember. Try not to forget that we're not Champions League this season so attracting the very best may still prove difficult.

I'd welcome Milner's arrival over another public pursuit for Kaka McRonaldinho-Eto'o.

Don't think they're too happy to be honest...

If Jimmy goes I will give up on football I truly will, my season ticket will be put back in the post and I`ll cancel my direct debit.

It makes me sick that this second rate Football Club with a "Sugar Daddy" can flex it`s financial muscle like this, no it`s not jealousy it`s the soul of football they are single handedly destroying.

Who the f**k are Man City and what have they ever done in English Football?

And to think I was having a great week, Gareth Barry saga x 10

Don't they have a sugar daddy? Only with less sugar?

He doesn't fill me with joy but at least we know what we'd be getting as opposed to signing a foreigner.

He's a West Brom on a cold Monday night type player.

I think his position is exactly what we missed last season with no Michael Johnson or Stephen Ireland to rely on.

You're trying to insult the Guy.

The transfer market is extremely complicated this season, for starters there is going to be a further premium on English home grown players more than there usually is. In addition the now top 8 clubs have heightened ambitions to be challenging for 4th.. so on the one hand they will not want to let their key players go while offering more competition for the best players available..
The playing field has leveled up considerably.. Spurs have a bit of extra dosh, rags and pool less.. City top the lot.. and in many ways the rest of the bunch are perhaps going to wait and see what City do, as a kind of strategy to determine firstly how the market is going to be effected by City's purchasing power.. and secondly as a way of letting City get on with it, get who they can/want and then hope that we will shut up and let the rest of them do their business in peace as it were.

i can understand Villa fans getting irate about losing Milner, he is a key player for them and selling him really does make it seem like they are not serious about getting a higher than 6th spot finish.

Im looking at this bid thinking that the 20 mil was just to test the water at Villa, also perhaps to start the whole thing off in a more sensible way so we dont get accused of distorting the market as much as we would if we had gone in with an initial bid of say 26 or 27 mil.

Milner is a terrific player and helps with the quota thing, so there is going to be more and more of a premium on that. He is versatile, has vision and a serious work rate, he also has something that Gerrard has, which i would describe as never stops trying to find different ways of breaking teams down, i have watched him a lot with the U21's etc and he is a cut above the average in that sense, he is a Gerrard or a Lampard in the making.. and as such it is up to City to determine what he is worth to us. i would still be happy with 30 mil, but that is based on him being proven Prem and English, it isn't a gamble, we know what we would be getting.

I would say exactly the same. What O'Neil is absolute master of is making decent players look world beaters in specific role. Look at one dimensional players like Carew and Milner shining in his system. That system is built around certain types of players to certain roles.

Our system is nothing like Villa's. We would see Milner of Newcastle how was constantly running blind alleys rather than Milner of Villa who is instructed to run certain type of routes and do EXACTLY certain type of things in certain positions. Villa's system don't need any sort of flair or football brain. It demands powerful running style and work rate first and foremost and at that Milner is at his best. However, when you are trying to feed Tevez rather than Carew, you also need to keep up with their phenomenal speed of thought. Our players with REAL football brain like Ireland were struggling with it, never mind Milner.

Again, I'm not saying he is shite. He isn't. But I don't think he'd suit our system. I sincerely hope Robbie Manc has been part of the planning process for this transfer and has a genuine plans for him in our system. Otherwise we are looking at the bottom of the worst rabbithole in whole Director of Football system, players being bought for big money who don't even fit managers plans. One of the main reasons why I don't like that system.

Would love to know what routes Milner is on? I mean hes played left wing, right wing and centre mid, all with reasonable success. Does he remain on the same routes for all positions? or do the EXACTLY certain types of thigns change for each position?

As if its that simple.

ha REAL football brain like ireland. seriosuly mate what a load of crap.

Good post that mate. Although I dont believe he is Gerrard/Lamps in the making I think he is a fantastic player and like you say ticks the "home grown" box.

Of course Villa fans are upset. He is their best player imo and they will not replace him. I have a mate whos a villa fan and he said "who gives a f**k about the money, who are we going to get to replace him? Cant progress by selling your best players". Too true.

Anyway Hope we get him

anyone called Jermaine is over-rated - its just a fact of life.

I can understand Villa turning down 20 million for Milner, he's a key player and they don't need that kind of money. I hope however, that we leave it at that and turn our attention elsewhere and we don't have another lescottesque saga with it where we end up being the panto villains yet again (pardon the pun)
