Gunnar gets new deal and loan

Postby Mark (Blue Army) » Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:18 pm

Popular Faroese goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen has signed a one-year contract extension to his current deal and will now join Tranmere Rovers for six months on loan.

The 24-year-old made a dramatic debut away to Arsenal last April, stepping off the bench when Shay Given injured his shoulder to keep a clean sheet. The Emirates remains his only senior appearance.

The return of Joe Hart from a loan at Birmingham and Stuart Taylor’s new deal means that there is plenty of cover between the sticks at senior level, and the move to the League One side will allow Gunnar a sustained run of first-team football.

He is set to step straight into action in tonight's friendly against Nottingham Forest at Prenton Park.

Good luck to him, he's ultimately odds on to get released within a season or two by City but I hope he does well at Tranmere

They must rate him to do this though & think he could break through. With all the keepers we seem to have around the club, I wonder if they have worries about being able to keep both of Hart & Given happy for very long & if they're expecting one to leave during the next year or so?

It could also be due to Given's injury I suppose. Keegan let something slip when it happened, about it possibly reccurring.

is there any point in this?

At 24 he wasn't trusted to do the job I can't see that changing in a year - seems daft to me but hey ho

In fairness, if we were not on the verge of CL (or if it were a case of a relegation issue and the game really mattered), I suspect Fulop would not have been brought in, and Gunnar would have been given the games. We were lucky to get an experienced keeper that served us well. Can't win if you can't score at least 1.
