In case it interests anyone, Simon Kuper and his economist friend whose name totally escapes me have a very interesting chapter on penalty taking in their book Why England Lose (or "Soccernomics", as it was re-titled here in North America). Worth reading if anyone has the time.

I've only taken one penalty kick. It was at the end of the the final, decisive game of the season. The score was 1-1. The other team got a throw-in.
