Anyone here remember anything Rick Holden did for us?

I only ask coz the best goal i ever saw was scored by him - for halifax town in about 1987. A long ball was hoofed upfield by a halifax defender from a corner and with the wind everyone in the ground thought it would go dead at the other end - apart from rick. i watched as he sped off, on his own from the halfway line, and remember thinking "what is he doing"?

All became apparent when it hit the corner flag and bounced infield with only him and the goalie anywhere within about 40m. He collected the ball from th ecorner flag and he could've advanced towards goal but chose not to. spotting the goalie on the edge of the 6 yard box he moved the ball about 3m away from the flag and chipped the ball into the net. one of the best pieces of skill i've ever seen.

yet i don't remember him doing anything special for city - anyone?

He was absolute garbage, the slowest thing on two legs and like a park player. Reid sold off Michael Hughes and signed this duffer.

Mind you Reid also sold off Colin Hendry and kept Steve Redmond; sold off Clive Allen and kept Adrian bloody Heath ... I could go on, but its too painful.

Cracking player for Oldham, was well pleased when we signed him. Was mostly awful for us. No idea why, he just didn't look the same player. Maybe was just outside of his comfort zone?

the rumour round these parts at the time was that although clearly naturally talented - he was the type that didn't like training all that much and enjoyed <ahem> the occasional pint. honestly dunno if that's true or not.

I can remember how he used to stagger & wheeze down the wing, then Terry Phelan would sprint 70 yards past him, only to be ignored as 'Tricky Ricky' crossed the ball directly to the nearest defender & watched as the ball, & Phelan, disappeared back down the pitch..

I think the problem was the way we played him. At Oldham he got the ball to feet level with edge of the area, a few jinks and crossed it in. We used him like David White, played it 10 yards in front of him on the halfway line and expected him to dart down the wing!

Those days were the golden era of my childhood, White, Quinn, 2 5th place finishes, smashing Leeds 4-0, finishing above Scum.

But I have no memory of Rick Holden ever playing for us.

Sounds like its best to keep it that way.

I think the problem was the way we played him. At Oldham he got the ball to feet level with edge of the area, a few jinks and crossed it in. We used him like David White, played it 10 yards in front of him on the halfway line and expected him to dart down the wing!

Oldham had a small artificial pitch with people who used to attack the near post area, so a decent ball in that area, low or high caused problems. We had a great big real pitch with Niall Quinn stood at the far post. Tricky was knackered by the time he got down the wing & half the time could only just about reach the 6 yard box with his crosses unless he floted them slowly to be caught by the keeper/ nodded away etc.
