Our Own Youngsters

Postby Niall Quinns Discopants » Wed Jul 13, 2011 10:47 am

Ok.

Lot of talk going on which youngsters will get chances next year and who will be in around the squad. With new 25 player squad limitations and with homegrown rule in place it's almost guaranteed some will feature at some stage. I'd love to hear from people who have attended Academy/reserve games.

Some names that should have a chance:
Guidetti - Tied to new contract and seems very promising to me from what I've seen of him on. I think he has been promised some sort of role as back up striker

McGivern - Involved in North American tour. We are filled with leftbacks and centerbacks and while he has had some fine reports on his loans and made his debut, I doubt he'll make it with us in long term. I think he'll be sold next summer.

Boyata (does he actually count as homegronw? Not sure) - One of Mancini's favourite youngsters and hugely talented imo although needs lot of work still. He'll be in, I'm sure.

Mee - Same as McGivern. Talented lad but I don't see much future for him at this stage on level we are.

Helan - Supposed to be another talented lad but some say it's hard to tell what position he'd play in next level. Apparently doesn't quite have build for fullback in next level and we don't play with 4-4-2 wingers (nevermind wingbacks which seems his natural position).

Henshall - Supposed to be really really talented lad but too early for him this year and probably next as well. From what I've seen of him, kind of player who really needs to train his right foot as right now he is almost as one footed as Petrov.

Ibrahim - Didn't really look like someone who has attributes needed in modern world class team but we'll see.

Bunn - Some people have been raving about his performances for Academy and reserves but looks nothing like ready for top professional football against grown men. Needs to spend time drinking Guinness and eating cheese with some gym work thrown in. Clearly has eye for goals though.

Weiss - Will be interesting to see whether he gets his chance. If he doesn't, he is in situation where there will be demand for him and he will probably be sold.

Nimely - I think he'll be fighting with Guidetti. Another who is supposed to be hugely talented but some say his overall contribution still needs lot of improvement.

Razak - Honestly, don't know much about the kid.

Wabara - Got his first game against Bolton but as Razak don't know much about him

Have I missed anyone? Thoughts?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Gai Assulin? He's apparently 20 according to wikipedia. (so make that 29 then)

Doesn't count. He wasn't with the Club before he turned 18 and therefore isn't homegrown. He is under 21 but in European squad limitations you need to have certain amount of players who have come through Club Academy.

Gai Assulin will never play for our first team. Mark my words.

I've never seen him play but if he was so promising why was he released by Barca? yes they have possibly the best team in the world but their promising players get their chances.
and these days you really have to be good to get a chance in our team too!

Doesn't count as homegrown, but I'd like to think he might feature at some point.

Joan Angel Roman.

For me the most outstanding of our young crop. Only one i have seen to have the genuine potential to make it at the highest level.

Could well be our Fabragas of the future.

Also Assulin will feature in pre season, likely will play in the 1st squad next season, a serious knee injury has hampered his progress since he moved, think he has a chance of making it.

Incredible ignorance.

Barca actually did offer him a contract, but he decided to move on. He had a ridiculous amount of offers from other teams so it was a bit of coup that we got him. He nearly broke into the Barca team a couple of years back! He's just had terrible luck with injuries. He's a highly talented young lad. Put it this way - he's probably better than Weiss and we all seem to love him.

Fair enough, I stand corrected.
Hope he gets over his injury problems and proves me wrong.

Ditto sir. Also, i appreciate your humility! I've got used to an internet where people snap back angrily so was expecting such a response! haha

Also - sorry if i sounded patronising!

With youngsters btw - how about Angel? Isn't he meant to be very promising?

What about that new kid Denis Suarez? He's on tour with the team.

Just found out that McDermott left for Huddersfield Town two weeks ago. Apparently the club offered him a new deal.

Good move. Can't see him making it with us anymore, every time I've seen Mee play he has looked a bit lost and a bit too weak.
I was surprised to see that Suarez kid as part of the team in US. surely he is going to play with the EDS or so next season anyway?

Razak looked promisisng in that mini cameo he made against WBA.
Abu is supposed to be doing really well on loan in Norway.
Roman and Benali are supposedly the most talented players in our academy, don't think others stand much chance since the club moved on so much in a such a short space of time. I remember just a few years back we were all dead excited about Weiss, Vidal, Mee and Trippier

in the few reserve games i saw i really liked the look of mcdermott. great pace and excellent on the ball. maybe a bit of a headless chicken at times. but i think he has a decent career ahead of him.

On the talk of youngsters we have 4 players (could be 5 if the sun is to be believed) in the England U17 squad. An incredible feat, surprised there is no andy cole's lad in there.

Francis Benali kid? Really? Haven't seen him mentioned much in Academy match reports.

Ahmad Benali I don't think is related to Francis Benali unless he was a local.I think our Benali is a Moss Side lad. Very talented from what I have seen but had a flat year last year with injuries. Will need to push on and impress again this year in the EDS and then who knows.

I kind of seem to remember reading somewhere that he is Benali's son or nephew or something like that. Then again, I could easily be getting him mixed with someone else.

Has some flair for sure but headless chicken is a fair description. Also at times looked very lazy when I have seen him.Just switches off!
