Nice to see some excellent posts in this thread - they've definitely helped calm some worries of mine. I've been following the Sneijder developments in the media the last couple of days and have been feeling that if (if!) United were to get him it would make our own summer acquisitions look a lot less stellar - even if we were to get Nasri. Not that I am fixated on them as our neighbours, but because they were already the team to beat and were so clearly the better team on Sunday. Could Sneijder make the better team, on the day, even better?
Three points, however:
Sneijder would surely take their summer spending to around the £90 million mark, making media trolls and rabid Rag fanboys like the Independent's James Lawton look even more foolish than they already are. "City are trying to buy success, unlike United...blither, blather," etc etc...
Many a high profile creative player has made a right mess of a hitherto smooth-running midfield. Big midfield stars can take a while to settle.
A third point - we are probably nowhere near as poor as the Community Shield suggested, and are just lacking fitness.
I'd say Nasri could improve us more than Sneijder could improve United, as we would have potentially twice the creative midfield options we had last season, when we were not really that far behind. And that's without the potential of Aguero to change matches on his own, and maybe even PASS to his team mates, creating all sorts of attacking options.
Sneijder? I'd love for us to sign him, if only as sign of our intent. I think Nasri would fit in better, though.
