it doesn't feel anywhere near as bad losing out on a player you were never really in for in the first place.

I agree. I also have no idea why we were not in for him, what with the Tevez card to play. Him going to the rags is not good.

He is a little injury prone though isnt he.......I rate him but given the choice Id go for Nasri every time.

Like most people the thought of Schneijder going to the rags leaves me sick in the stomach. However, we can't make bids to stop every player going to them. If we had gone for Schneijder they would likely have gone for Nasri. Mancini obviously fancies Nasri and I assume we are very confident of landing him otherwise we wouldn't be sniffing at Schneijder.

It's still just possible Schneijder will turn them down given they're asking him to take a significant pay cut. I'm not holding my breath though.

Can't see them selling Sneijder AND Eto'o unless we have agreed to sell them Tevez.

If Sneijder goes, I would have thought it more likely he'd be swapped for Tevez but perhaps we don't want Sneijder after all. If they sell both & don't sign a big name, they're going to piss off a lot of fans I should think. They'd be writing off the season.

Inter's CEO has stated that Sneijder won't be leaving this window.

Nice to see some excellent posts in this thread - they've definitely helped calm some worries of mine. I've been following the Sneijder developments in the media the last couple of days and have been feeling that if (if!) United were to get him it would make our own summer acquisitions look a lot less stellar - even if we were to get Nasri. Not that I am fixated on them as our neighbours, but because they were already the team to beat and were so clearly the better team on Sunday. Could Sneijder make the better team, on the day, even better?

Three points, however:

Sneijder would surely take their summer spending to around the £90 million mark, making media trolls and rabid Rag fanboys like the Independent's James Lawton look even more foolish than they already are. "City are trying to buy success, unlike United...blither, blather," etc etc...

Many a high profile creative player has made a right mess of a hitherto smooth-running midfield. Big midfield stars can take a while to settle.

A third point - we are probably nowhere near as poor as the Community Shield suggested, and are just lacking fitness.

I'd say Nasri could improve us more than Sneijder could improve United, as we would have potentially twice the creative midfield options we had last season, when we were not really that far behind. And that's without the potential of Aguero to change matches on his own, and maybe even PASS to his team mates, creating all sorts of attacking options.

Sneijder? I'd love for us to sign him, if only as sign of our intent. I think Nasri would fit in better, though.

Well that could be it. City should absolutely insist on the £50m they want, without a euro less. That pair might raise the money. Sneijder is 32 million, Eto'o a lot less, given his age. I'd really like to see Eto'o come to us as I feel he is absolutely made for our league, but that seems to have never been possible. Losing Tevez will be a massive kick in the cogs for us, massive. Kun is a real coup, fair enough, but Tevez is utterly proven in our league.

Nasri, well, that would be a terrific boost. Better than Sneijder? No, he isn't. Yet...

Supposedly Eto'o is off to russia for ridiculous money, sneijder is staying, tevez wont go to Inter, and now Inter want Lavezzi.

of course, at this point, none of that is certain

Just about the most ridiculous window this one. I would be happy with that outcome. The Rags not getting Sneijder and us keeping the best striker we have arguably ever had is a great scenario. Yeah, Tevez (or Kia bastard Jaroobwhatever) have been knobs, but I will happily watch another year of Tevez doing what he does. Seriously, I believe that Tevez and Kun is a recipe for the title. Throw in Nasri to our squad and it starts to look delicious...Tevez, Kun, Silva, Nasri...er, yes please.

This just keeps going round in circles doesn't it. Firstly to the Rags, then to us, then he's staying put, then he's back to the Rags; it's all so confusing!

Then there's the Tevez element, if 2 big money earners go, does that free up a place for Carlos or are they on a serious cost cutting exercise in readiness for the FFP regs?

It's all just a haze and only the few know exactly what's going on.

possibly....with Eto'o close to leaving (supposedly) I've now read that Milito may be the next out (although this is probably crap) instead of sneijder as the 2nd player leaving which could free up wages for Tevez..maybe.

Maicon was the other one offered out so it just makes you wonder what they are after. Personally, I think it's them cashing in some of their chips in a serious cost cutting exercise and no offer will come from them for Tevez.

yeah, i think aside from sneijder theyre trying to cut wages..Eto'o especially. i think theyre trying to rebuild after losing out to Milan last season...bringing in new, younger faces like Alvarez and potentially Lavezzi

Last updated at 10:54 PM on 11th August 2011

Manchester United have given up on their bid to sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had been hoping to make the Dutch international his final signing of the summer.

But senior Old Trafford sources told Sportsmail that United have now grown tired of a saga that has dragged on since the end of last season and have decided to pull the plug on the deal.

With 27-year-old Sneijder sitting right at the wrong end of United's age limit for new signings, Ferguson and chief executive David Gill have decided to walk away from a player who was demanding in excess of £200,000-a-week in wages.

United's decision to back off explains the fact that Sneijder's representatives have this week been hawking him around United's Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City. Neither club have an expressed an interest, with City sources describing the overall cost of the deal as 'mind blowing'.

With Sneijder desperate to leave Inter, it now seems very possible that the World Cup finalist will find himself stuck at the San Siro when the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

The only way that United's interest will be rekindled is if Sneijder dramatically drops his financial demands later in the window.

However, United do not expect this to happen and Old Trafford sources last night stressed that the club will do 'absolutely nothing' to resurrect what would have been the big Premier League transfer of the summer.

It is clear that Inter and Sneijder would have to make the first move.
