Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips: Loved but Not Wanted
It seems ever more certain that Shaun Wright-Phillips (SWP) has played his last game for Manchester City and he may well be moving the short distance across Greater Manchester to Bolton Wanderers.
Image
This morning Bolton manager Owen Coyle made it clear he will do all he can to convince Wright-Phillips that Bolton is a place that will benefit him in every way.
City manager Roberto Mancini admits that he likes Wright Phillips, he thinks he is a good guy and a great professional but he simply doesn't see a use for him moving the team forwards.
That is a perfectly acceptable viewpoint as far as I am concerned. For example, I love my brother but I wouldn't employ him because he doesn't have the skill set I require.
But there is a large group of City fans who want SWP to stay. They see him as one of very few links to the pre-Mansour days and they feel he loves the club and should be given a place in the squad.
I have no doubt that if Mancini saw enough in SWP to warrant his inclusion he would give him a squad number, but that plainly isn't the case.
It's now for City fans to back the manager's decision and not use SWP as a stick with which to beat Mancini every time something goes wrong.
Of course, SWP loves City and the fans in the main hold him close to their hearts too. But that is not enough to gain a place in a modern footballing squad.
I hope SWP goes on to great success wherever he plays as he really is a good guy but that doesn't mean he must be guaranteed inclusion in one of the world's best squads.

Arsenal open the door for both Fabregas and Nasri exit
The saga surrounding Cesc Fabregas’ transfer to Barcelona appeared to be approaching a resolution last night with Arsenal finally ready to let him go as well as accepting an offer for Samir Nasri from Manchester City in two deals worth around £60m in total.
Barcelona anticipate they will be able to tie up a deal for Fabregas this week that is weighted in favour of the 23-year-old's achievements. The deal under negotiation is thought to be €34m [£29.8m] paid up front and up to €6m in add-ons. Those add-ons break down as €2m for each of the first two league titles Fabregas might potentially win and another €2m for a Champions League victory.
The payments are structured over his first five years at the club and contingent on him playing a certain number of games for Barcelona. The incentive for Barcelona is that it is a way of them staggering the payments. Yet the deal still falls well short of the £40m valuation previously put on the player this summer by Wenger.
As for Nasri, it would now appear that Wenger is prepared to sell the player this summer to Manchester City for £23m. Nasri is out of contract next summer and already had a £200,000-a-week deal on the table from City. Having originally claimed that it would be impossible for Arsenal to sell both players, their clear desire to leave the club has left Wenger with little option.
It is understood that neither player will be in the squad to play Newcastle on Saturday evening. Fabregas has not played a game for Arsenal since April and has not participated at all in pre-season. Nasri played for France last night in their 1-1 draw with Chile in a friendly in Paris.
Although it has been suggested that Fabregas will take a pay cut in his £120,000-a-week wages, the reality is that the player will simply accept a lower offer from Barcelona than the improvement on his existing deal that he could have earned by signing a new contract at Arsenal.
The money will considerably strengthen Wenger's hand in the transfer market although how much he spends of it remains to be seen. The Valencia midfielder Juan Mata is a priority. The amount of money at his disposal may mean that Wenger may also set his sights on a more expensive target such as the Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
Having signed only Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain so far this summer, Wenger will have to strengthen in midfield with the absence of Fabregas and Nasri. He also needs a centre-back. Agreeing a deal for Phil Jagielka with Everton has proved fruitless so far and the player has showed no major inclination to move. Wenger may now be forced to look elsewhere, such as Bolton's Gary Cahill.

Also on the move is Samuel Eto'o, who is set to go to the newly wealthy Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, according to the Internazionale chief executive Ernesto Paolillo. With Eto'o bringing in a large fee, the Italian said Wesley Sneijder would stay at Inter, and denied any interest in Manchester City's Carlos Tevez.
Eto'o had been the subject of a possible exchange deal with Tevez, but it now appears he will be going to the Dagestan-based side. "Eto'o is leaving," Paolillo said yesterday, "he is going to the Russian club" – though the player's agent said only that "we have practically agreed things with Anzhi".
The offer to the 2010 European champions from a team who were only promoted to the Russian Premier League in 2009 was described as "intelligent" by Inter president Massimo Moratti yesterday.

CARLOS TEVEZ POISED TO JOIN INTER MILAN
CARLOS Tevez will join Inter Milan this week, if Manchester City agree to let him go out on loan.
Italian giants Inter Milan, who are losing Samuel Eto'o to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, are desperate to land Carlos Tevez and have tabled an offer to Manchester City.
City boss Roberto Mancini is unwilling to let Tevez leave for less that £50m, however, he might
Mancini said: "I don't know. A lot can happen in one month but if he stays I am happy."
Tevez arrived back at Manchester City's training ground on Monday morning with his future still uncertain.
The Argentina striker arrived at the Carrington training ground as a passenger in a black Hummer, and exchanged an embrace with a security guard before going into the complex.
Tevez has made no secret of the fact that he wants a move. Brazilian side Corinthians failed in a bid last month and Inter Milan looks to be the most likely destination for the player.
In June, Tevez told a chat show on Argentinian television that he would not return to Manchester ever - "not even for a vacation" - and complained about the weather.
The skies were suitably grey on Monday and there was a chill in the air to welcome him back.
Tevez told the Argentinian television channel Telefe: "There's nothing to do in Manchester. There's two restaurants and everything's small. It rains all the time. You can't go anywhere.
"There comes a moment where you say 'Where am I going to go with my family?' and you begin to feel bad.
"Of course, one trains, plays, does things, and when the family or friends come one feels bad and you can't take them to the movies because they don't understand anything.
"I will not return to Manchester, not for a vacation, not anything."

Patrick Vieira: Mario Balotelli will come good for Manchester City
Manchester City coach Patrick Vieira has pleaded for fans to have patience with mercurial Blues stiker Mario Balotelli.
The 20-year-old Italian has rarely been out of the headlines since his move from Inter Milan last season - but not always for the right reasons.
The talented forward was in trouble in pre-season after a flippant back-heeled finish against LA Galaxy saw him subbed off by angry boss Roberto Mancini.
Vieira, who will be in the dugout this season following a long and distinguished playing career, said: "People forget how young he really is.
"I hope this year he will learn from his mistakes. He is a really talented footballer and I hope he can show everybody how good he is.
"I believe we improved last season, winning the FA Cup and finishing third, and I believe we can challenge Chelsea, United and the rest of the teams."

Cheers Chinners.

All these teams who 'may' do this & 'could' do that who've signed nobody so far yet the season starts in two days. I wonder how much of this is due to the fact that they don't want these blokes on big wages on the bill until as late as possible so they gamble on getting them at the last minute ?

What the fuck Arsenal are playing at is anyone's guess but if they've had an offer for Nasri for all this time but waited til now to accept it, they are fucking useless unless they've been waiting for a replacement to agree to definitely sign.

We'll see. If they don't replace him, we'll know they are taking the piss out of their supporters & were deliberately running down the transfer clock to try & save money by pretending they'd run out of time to get someone in. That would be lower than snake shit if they pull that one.

Anyone see that about the Brum owner, Carson Yung? Seems he's being held in China for money laundering and is not allowed out to see Brums next game. It just goes from bad to worse for them doesn't it. Relegated, manager fucks off to your cross-town rivals and now the owner gets locked up. Poor Bastards.

Thursday;s Mill

Does what appears to be concrete news regarding definite progress about Cesc Fábregas shuffling closer to the Arsenal exit door even count as a rumour any more? We're not sure, but you can read all about it here. And here. And here. And here. And here. But not here. (guardian.co,uk/football)

You flinched, didn't you?

In other insufferably tedious ongoing transfer blah we've no intention of dwelling on for too long because life's too short, Chelsea will offer Yossi Benayoun to Spurs in a bid to grease the wheels of Luka Modric's move to Stamford Bridge, while Manchester City will send Carlos Tevez to Internazionale on loan if Samuel Eto'o realises his boyhood dream of getting to line up in the white-with-green-trim of the Russian Premier League side FC Anzhi Makhachkala, the Russian Premier League side based in the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, which is set to make the Cameroon international the best paid player on the planet by offering him £300,000 per week.

Of course it's probably not too outlandish to suggest that once Tevez and his "people" get wind of the kind of wedge on offer at the Russian club, they too will begin angling for a move to the North Caucasus region, despite the cold weather, paucity of decent restaurants and mountainous local terrain which ensure at least one leg of a trip to Buenos Aires involves sitting on the back of a donkey.

Clearly impressed with the Newcastle midffielder Joey Barton's suggested solutions for dealing with the disaffected youth who've taken to the streets in an orgy of looting and destruction in recent nights – water cannon, tear gas, pummelings, a curfew, vigilantism and changing the format of Newsnight (don't judge, at least he's taking an interest) – the Stoke City manager Tony Pulis is going to offer him £60,000 per week to go and play for Stoke City.

Fresh from his side Italy's win over the world champions Spain in Bari last night, the New Jersey-born Italian American Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi is being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Stoke are also rumoured to be interested in signing Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios from Spurs, but have told Daniel Levy they won't pay a penny more than £17m for the pair.

The Fiorentina winger Alessio Cerci is set to become the latest player to spit in his right hand and shake hands with Roberto Mancini before taking a pen and scribbling his name on the bottom of a Manchester City contract covered with very large numbers. Liverpool's French striker David Ngog will do much the same, except with Owen Coyle and considerably less enthusiasm before inking his deal with Bolton Wanderers. Despite having out-bought most if not all of his Premier League peers, Steve Bruce hasn't finished his summer trolley-dash around the mid-ranking Premier League midfielders aisle yet. The Totenham and Croatia midfielder Niko Kranjcar is currently on the Sunderland manager's radar, but will only be swept from the shelf if Craig Bellamy turns up his already turned-up nose at a move to the Stadium of Light.

With Arsène Wenger believed to be plotting and scheming to bring Wigan's Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega to the Emirates, the Latics are counter-scheming on the plausibility of stealing Peter Odemwingie from West Bromwich Albion. Arsenal have also been linked with a move for FC Twente's Costa Rican striker Bryan Ruiz, while the Everton manager David Moyes will be given a whopping war chest of £4m to make Everton's first purchase since they poached the inside-right Stanley Bentham from Wigan in 1934, but only if Fenerbahce agree to part with £4m in exchange for Joseph Yobo first.

Sign of the times as Manchester City launch Etihad Stadium B*ll*x
The new signs being put up at Manchester City's ground Etihad Airways Stadium Pic by Steve Allen manchester city stadium eastlands
It's out with the old and in with the Blue at Manchester City – with the new name for the club’s stadium on display for the world to see.
Image
The ground, formerly known as the City of Manchester Stadium, was renamed the Etihad Stadium last month as part of a sponsorship deal with the Abu Dhabi-based airline worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
A giant cherry picker was yesterday installing sky-blue posters and signs bearing the Etihad name on the stands and entrances to the 47,800-capacity stadium.
The Blues kick off the Premier League season on Monday, with the visit of Welsh newcomers Swansea City. Work at the ground is going on around-the-clock as the kick-off draws closer.
As widely predicted, Etihad won the battle to sponsor the stadium – built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games – as well as the club’s shirts. The land around the ground has become the ‘Etihad Campus’ as part of the deal. The cash will help bankroll the transformation of the area over the coming years.
It will see City, who moved to the stadium from Maine Road in 2003, shift their training operation from Carrington.
Proposals currently out to consultation include a ‘world-beating’ complex of pitches and medical facilities, as well as a 7,000-seater stadium for the club’s youth teams. The club wants 80 per cent of the 250 expected jobs to go to local workers. No plans have yet been revealed for land immediately next to the stadium but it is understood proposals are being discussed.
The naming rights deal was seen as a big boost to the Blues, who will play in the Champions League for the first time this season. They need to comply with Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules which stipulate clubs must not post aggregate losses of more than £40.5m over the next three years. The deal, which will see the airline sponsor the stadium for the next 10 years, is said to be the most expensive football sponsorship deal ever.
The club are also expected to feature in in-flight entertainment on Etihad flights.

OTHER FANS VIEWPOINT BOLLOX
Nasri Sale Will Cost Arsenal £20M In Lost Champions League Revenues Alone by Ben Biancardi
In Nasri, Arsenal have a player with undoubted potential yet the ability to infuriate. In the recent friendly with Boca at the Emirates Cup he went missing all together. Is this a sign of things to come? Or is this the same unmotivated out of form Nasri we saw at the end of last season.
The press are calling Arsenal stupid for keeping him and possibly losing out on a £20 million transfer fee. But with Fabregas’ likely departure, if Nasri was to leave as well Arsenal would be left very short creatively and there doesn’t seem to be many players around that could replace either with similar quality for similar money.
If Arsenal do sell Nasri to Man City as the press report and Fabregas to Barca, what would happen to Arsenal next season? They could seriously run the risk of not qualifying for the Champions League in 2012-2013 and risk losing the £20 million minimum TV rights and gate receipts.
Some people will point out that with the current squad Arsenal have been predicted to finish outside the top four by many papers, however if history is anything to go by, Arsene Wenger will get them into the Champions league yet again and prove the critics wrong. In my humble opinion Arsenal should keep hold of Nasri until a replacement has been found. As to lose Nasri and Fabregas without suitable replacements would be committing Hari Kari.

THREE Man City strikers, ONE answer to Newcastle’s burning question
With the new Premier League season due to start on Saturday, Newcastle’s search for a striker in addition to Demba Ba has so far proved fruitless. One club that has an abundance of players in that position is Manchester City, and manager Roberto Mancini has signalled that three have no future at the club. Those three are Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and ex-Magpie Craig Bellamy, but would one of these players fit the bill for Alan Pardew?
Newcastle’s top striking transfer targets have seemingly been and gone and other than Daniel Sturridge, who himself used to play for Man City, most of the rumours seem to be centring around Tottenham’s forwards right now. However, the three above mentioned City players all have plenty of Premier League experience under their belt and each has a point to prove one way or another; points that could be proved at St James’ Park, perhaps?
Let’s start with ex-Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy. The fiery Welshman left under something of a cloud in 2005 after a bust-up with Alan Shearer, but prior to that he excited the St James’ Park faithful. Bellamy has pace to burn, but an attitude to go with it and at 32 he isn’t getting any younger. Even if the Magpies did want Bellamy, it doesn’t seem like the Welshman would be open to a return to the north-east anyway if a recent interview is anything to go by, saying that at times it was ‘embarrassing’ to be Newcastle player.
So Bellamy is a no go, but what about an equally controversial player; Emmanuel Adebayor? The Togo striker is arguably the most talented of the trio, but like the Welshman, has a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way. The 27 year old scored plenty of goals for Arsenal and doesn’t have a bad record for City either, and even netted a handful of times for Real Madrid last season. The obvious stumbling block that comes to mind would be Adebayor’s ridiculous wages, but he is thought to be keen on a return to England. Newcastle were linked with him back in April but nothing has come of it since, perhaps something Pardew should resurrect?
Finally there’s Roque Santa Cruz. The 29 year old must wish he never joined City, although his bank balance might not agree! Cast your mind back to 2009 and the Paraguayan had just finished a second successful season at Blackburn; two years later and he’s no further forward. Santa Cruz really looked off the pace when he returned to Ewood Park on loan last season and looking back at his career, his striking figures weren’t even that impressive when he was at Bayern Munich, although his international stats are decent.
From starting off as a promising trio at the start of this article, rightly or wrongly, I seem to have slated them all off. Bellamy will never return due to what’s gone on before and Santa Cruz seems to have left all form in the naughties, so that leaves Adebayor. He is the most talented and prolific of the three and if Newcastle can get Man City to contribute to his wages, then perhaps a loan deal might not be such a bad idea.

Major doubt over Garry Monk fitness for Swansea City's Premier League opener
BRENDAN RODGERS has admitted Swansea City captain Garry Monk remains a major doubt for the club's Premier League opener against Manchester City on Monday.
Centre-back Monk has been struggling with a foot problem since the promotion-sealing play-off win at Wembley in May but had offered hope of a return in time for the Etihad Stadium trip, the Swans' first game in the top-flight in almost 30 years.
Yet it is now thought that despite returning to full training, Monk will not be ready to take on Roberto Mancini's side and will target the home clash with Wigan a week later.
“Garry did fantastically well to play in the play-off final and he struggled a little after that, but over the course of pre-season he has been doing great work,” said Rodgers on the skipper who signed a new three-year deal earlier this week.
“He still has a little numbness in his foot, whether he will be ready remains to be seen but he will be very close.
“He has been doing all the cardiovascular work it is just his football fitness. He is getting there every day, he has a fantastic attitude and he is someone I want back sooner rather than later. He is a fantastic captain and if he is not ready for Monday he won’t be far away.”
Steven Caulker and Ashley Williams are likely to start at centre-back against big-spending City, Alan Tate set to start at left-back with Wales international Neil Taylor still serving a suspension for the red card picked up during the play-offs.
Rodgers is keen to bring in further defensive cover, acknowledging interest in Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates and Liverpool's young centre-half Daniel Ayala, although he stressed he is prepared to wait until the end of the transfer window and the deadline for naming Premier League squad to ensure he gets in the right man.
Rodgers is still looking to add another defender to his squad following the acquisition of Steven Caulker on loan from Tottenham.
“It is an area we want to strengthen," said Rodgers. "It is different for us this season in the Premier League as once you name your squad that's it until January so we have to make sure we have enough quality and enough reinforcements.
“I spoke to (Boro manager) Tony Mowbray about Matthew on his availability and where he was at. He has had a horrendous period with injury but did exceptionally last season and I was looking at where he was at. There are a number of players we are looking at but I won’t be in a rush.”
Rodgers added that new goalkeeper Michel Vorm will go straight into the squad and contention for Monday following his £1.5m move from Utrecht while confirmed Wales internationals Williams, Taylor and Joe Allen all returned from midweek duty without any fitness issues

Former Manchester City defender doubt for Bees
BRENTFORD will give late checks to Shaleum Logan and Niall McGinn ahead of Saturday's trip to Sheffield United.
Former Manchester City full-back Logan felt stiff during Tuesday night's Carling Cup exit at Hereford, while McGinn half an hour played for Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
Boss Uwe Rosler said: “Logan felt stiff but fought through and performed well under the cirumstances.
“We also have to see what shape Niall comes in following international duty.”
Leon Legge will return to the squad following a calf problem but Kirk Hudson (hip) and Toumani Diagouraga (knee) remain sidelined.
