New Players - Patience

Postby ant london » Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:32 pm

Firstly this is not remotely an "I told you so" thread as I don't think I ever was very forthright on the matter but IMO Edin's performance today was the most recent of a number of players who are currently in our squad who now look like they are/will be the business and who had shakey/mixed/uncertain or just downright poorly received starts with Manchester City and who had quite a vocal portion of fans on their back (admittedly not usually vocally at the ground in terms of booing or groaning and sighing but certainly players towards whom a huge amount of doubt was voiced).....

Nigel de Jong (one trick,no outlet).... Lescott......Dzeko......Milner,.......Barry.....Balotelli.....Savic......Kolo......Kolarov.....Zabaleta

I'm sure there are more but all of these guys have had a disproportionate amount of opprobrium directed towards them as they tried to find their feet (or continue to do so)....I just don't understand it to be honest. To mind, NOT supporting our own players only has potential/likely downside and ZERO upside.

Some signings might just be a busted flush full stop (look at how Boateng turned out.....Santa Cruz also maybe) but why doesn't everyone see the potential benefits of just unconditionally getting behind new signings. I remember the groaning that Goater got for a long while til he started to come good....now Dzeko looks like doing likewise (albeit in a much more naturally talented form)......why can't we bloody learn and just get behind our players???? Lots to gain and nothing really to lose.

Boateng was sold for more than we paid. A success IMO.

right - seeing as this isn't an "i told you so" thread then i can honestly say that where balotelli and kolarov are concerned - then i told you so.and where lescott, barry, milner and dzeko are concerned, i also told you so.

i may have got mancini wrong tho.

4-3 me. i win.

I agree, I think that Aguero and Nasri will come good and people need to be patient with them. Never ceases to amaze me how quickly some fans jump on players' backs.

We need players who can bed right in to the team.
We cant afford to be patient and wait for those two to come good, not after the money we spent on them.
Nasri was anonymous today and i always felt Aguero needed to hit the ground running.

Just because I am the worst "I told you so merchant" (and only one who seemed to admit being wrong more than once in mancityfans.net posting career in recent topic about players you were wrong about) I'm going to revisit my memory and see how I felt about them when we signed them and how I feel about them now. CityGer can do all the needed searches.

De Jong - I thought he is one trick pony. I still think he is one trick pony. It's just that he does that one trick extremely well. Having said that, now that De Jong has been injured it's like we have new player in Gareth Barry. My biggest critism however has been about system around De Jong rather than De Jong himself. With Nigel on the pitch, rest of the midfielders need to be attackminded. We are surrendering the game if we are partnering him with someone like Barry imo.

Lescott - I seem to remember I was fairly delighted with his signing as he is genuine leftsided central midfielder. I'm still relatively happy with him but harsh truth is that he is starting to look like the weakest link in our current starting line up. Still good player.

Dzeko - I advocated us to sign him for ages and I'm huge fan.

Milner - I thought we signed wrong player from Villa as I thought we should've gone for Young. I stand by that assesment. However Milner has shown some signs of improvement recently and had fantastic game last week. Needs to do it consistently though to justify the fee.

Barry - I was delighted with his signing at the time. He has had some less than sterling performances for us and I was starting to give up on him last season but he seems to have bounced back this season. Also, see De Jong.

Balotelli - I knew he was extremely talented nut case. So far he has more nutcase and less "extremely talented". I'm STILL on the fence with him but starting to lean towards "fuck off".

Savic - I had no opinion on this feller. So far in his cameo roles he has looked shaky but that could be because of numerous of reasons. Doesn't look very tall which is bit of a worry.

Kolo - Good, not great, signing. He has had ups and downs with us. It remains to be seen what sort of role he has to play but I feel that we are going to sign really top quality centerback at some stage and I reckon Toure will be gone.

Kolarov - I didn't like this signing as he looked one of those attacking fullbacks who can't defend for toffee in Italy. He has looked more or less the same for us.

Zabaleta - I thought he was good solid jack of all trades signing. He is one of my favourite players right now. I didn't rate him highly enough.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I just don't understand it to be honest.

i dont iether..

what i do understand though is that if any of the people that jump the gun on players ability after a month of joining were the City manager - we would be back in Div 3.

I think this is entirely an 'I told you so' thread without anyone actually telling us so...well done ant.

It's possible to have an honest critique of a player without it being blind unwaivering criticism, unless you are looking for a bizarro-Palus.

I think the point about being patient with new players is valid BUT we need enough players who will perform instantly or we need other players who can cover for them if they fail. Going into this season with just Dzeko & Balotelli & one other, if Tevez had gone, would have been dangerous. One injury & one loss of form & we're fucked. Now, even if Dzeko was struggling, we would still be strong in attacking options.

The same with Kolarov; he's looking better than last season but we needed Clichy.

Balotelli will only get a certain number of chances though. If he's any use to our club, he will respond in the right manner. If he doesn't Bob will fuck him right off; he won't let him cause shit amongst this, no chance.

Nasri was anonymous? What match were you watching? He was magnificent. And Aguero did hit the ground running once Bobby decided to play him. Two fabulous buys.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, it's just possible that you haven't really grasped the gravity of the situation.

Two points.....

Most importantly, we have been changing the entire squad over the last 3 years, there has been no history between the players, no established partnerships and no settled backbone

Secondly, the players we are buying now are world class and being bought to fit Bobbys master plan, many of our signings since we got all cashed up were players who we paid way over the top for just to attract them here and get the project off the ground

This year we have an established squad, a squad that is confident and a squad who knows who the governor is.

It's much easier now to bring new players in

That said, it still takes time to understand the perm if you are from a different country..... Kun is just an anomaly!

Liked Dzeko on his debut, but gradually downhill from that point.
I declared him a talentless lummock with no touch, skill or pace by the end of the season and also decided we'd been "flogged a rabbit".
Right again!
In my defence, he simply looks tons better for having a strike partner. About as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike playing as a lone striker
