Gael Clichy

How good is he!?

I must admit that I didn't know how good he was but, from what I have seen of him so far this season, we have bought an absolute diamond of a left-back there!

Offensively superb. Not really been paying that much attention to his defending because we've been so attacking this year.

It's strange to see Clichy there because where I'm sat, I get a very good view of fullbacks/wingers & I'm used to watching lumbering, thick headed, bags of shite. To see some bloke sprinting 40 yards & actually controlling the ball, playing 1-2's etc is a bit of a shock. I don't think he's the greatest defender but compared to what we usually have, he's like Tony Book.

Didn't realise just quite how quick he was, the boy has got a serious engine on him, even in the last minutes of the game he's bombing forward.

Will be interesting to see how he copes in games where we can't attack quite so much, if he can do the defensive duties as well as he does attacking/link up play then we could have the best left back in the league.

He has pace and touch, and I reckon Mancini will improve his defending compared to Wenger, we also have Aleks when the threat is more physical, plus Zaba, so we now, for the first time in my lifetime have really good strength in depth in the left back position.

Fantastic going forward, but historically can get found out when it comes to defending. With the start we have made, he hasn't actually had any defending to do hence him looking like a world beater. Long may it continue.

If it weren't for the fact that we signed Aguero and Nasri we'd no doubt all be crowing about his signing, he has been top class. Good in defence but excellent going forward, much improved balance to the team and signs yesterday again that the link up with our outstanding creative players will be superb. And he was an absolute bargain

Well said KK, I was going to start a similar thread. He gives us something very few prem teams have, a beyond competent defensive left back that can get forward. Watching Clichy-Richards-Zabs patrol those positions will make us even more deadly than in the past.

I've been very impressed by Gaël so far this season. An added bonus is that we now have two players with tremas in their names.
Have to say that I thought Kolarov did well in the game he played as well. We finally look like we have two good alternatives (at least) for every position.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kolarov plays more in Europe/Cups and Clichy mainly in the Prem - that way we get the best out of both of them.

compared to some of the money being spent on absolute shite, he looks an absolute bargain at the reported £7m.

When he first appeared playing for Arsenal as Cole's replacement, I could see why Arsenal let Cole go. Listening to the Arsenal fans when he moved to us, he was the problem with their defence last year (keeper and centre backs were obviously water tight).

I can see why they were willing to let him go, as Gibbs looks very promising, but it'd only make sense if they were a skint or lower league club. The fact that they sold him for peanuts and have no cover now for the left back just about sums up their recent transfer dealings.

I think Mancini will improve him defensively, as will having decent centre halves and cover in midfield. One of our problems last year is that we were designed for full backs to give width and for a variety of reasons, it never really happened. MOTD picked up on how effective it was last night, so it's definitely working.

Will be interesting when we play the rags. Their out and out wingers should keep the full backs pinned back, but raiding full backs can push wingers back to cover. Think we both look better going forward than defending, so it could be about 8-7.

What a signing he will be this season. He's had a solid start to the season, lets hope he carries it on.

As he dummied and skipped past a defender late on in the game I thought to myself "a left back not even city fans could hate"

Nice feeling.
Tracking back is overrated.
