Douglas Higginbottom wrote:All the stuff about playing the ball too centrally is of course correct but what surprised me was how ineffective Nasri and Silva were.Silva was ok in the first half but disappeared and for me the pair of them got themselves too far forward too early.Too often they weren't the ones doing the creative work leading into the box and as they got forward they got marked tightly and made everything congested.
Then of course if Barry and Yaya puyshed a little high up there was great danger if we lost the ball.Let's face it Barry and Yaya are not the fastest in recovering.I do think Nigel would have read the game better and sat better which in turn would likely have brought Nasri and especially Silva back to the ball more to the team's benefit.

This is spot on Doug. It seemed to me that Nasri, Silva & Aguero were feeling the pace and all were too far forward too often. It reminded me of the old Hughes/Sven days when the defenders were left with no passing options as Yaya & Barry became overworked because they were being left on their own. They in turn stopped helping create as they tired & it led to the kind of cock up we saw for their goal. In hindsight, Micah & Clichy plus another central midf player instead of Nasri would have been a better attack.

We had no width & played like Arsenal. Zabba kept going inside when Dzeko wanted a cross. We were doing ok early on though & looked a bit raggish in our pressure play. They would have kept it going with width & won by 4 or 5 though. We need to learn that or sides will pick us off with that many attackers in the team.

Tough call blaming Kolorov when the goal came from a breakaway in their third of the field through Barry giving the ball away and Nasri not stopping (legally or illegally) their runner. Kolorov would have had to be Usain fucking Bolt to get back there on time.

Im not just blaming him.. Napoli were playing fast counter attack and 3 defenders were in no mans land for the goal..I just think we should of been a hell of alot tighter.

You were blaming him though weren't you ? by asking where he was lol

He was in their right back's position :-D

In defense of Vinny he saved us from losing with that incredible goal line clearence....if it wasnt for that I would have slagged him off no end as his overall play was KAK.

Can't really argue with the result, even though Napoli relied, for the most part, on hitting us on the break
(and, for those of you who don't know what Nigel De Jong does for us: thats one of the things that he does, doesn't allow us to concede a goal like that)

Napoli worked like Trojans and they showed us the kind of defences we'll be faced with at the top level of the game.

Bit of an off-night for David Silva tonight, perhaps his head got a little bit swelled from all the high praise thats been accorded him recently: a number of his passes went astray, caught in possession far too often, although I suppose he was a marked man by Napoli, even to the extent of being surrounded by four Napoli players at times. But to be fair to him, he didn't hide, and was still searching and probing, in added time.

I was disappointed with Nasri, who went missing for long spells, even though he was involved with a number of good moves.

Our most consistent players were probably Ya Ya Toure, who's looking more and more the complete player this season, shorn of the attacking midfield player responsibility. Vincent Kompany,-pace his late cock-up, Joleon Lescott, and Pablo Zabaleta, which, I suppose speaks volumes of the extent to which Napoli's superb defensive organisation frustrated us.

I think it was a great learning experience for us which we can only benefit from.
The important thing is that we didn't lose, as it might have made our trip to Bayern a more nervy one
And Napoli are indeed a side to watch, although they might get emboldened by this result and drop points to Villareal

Mancini got it wrong tonight with the subs. Tevez and Johnson should have been brought on at least 15-20 minutes earlier because we were so flat for the first half hour of the second half. Richards aswell would have given them something to think about.

We definitely didn't get it right there and failed to adjust ourselves to what was in front of us. They did park the bus but we made it easier for them in too many ways and didn't change our shape to compensate. As it went on we got dragged into the idea that just more bodies were required. In short we didn't play to our strengths and got sucked into playing a different game. A lot of credit is due to Napoli, you wont see too many defensive set ups and displays that well done this season at Etihad. That said the players still need a lot more experience with each other to know what to do in those situations.
This will be a valuable lesson for the team when they look at it and I am 100% sure Mancini will not let them do that again. Doug is nail on head with his comments.

Lastly there is no need to pick on individual players there and there is no need to worry about the other games. That will be the most difficult test at home we will have in the group because Bayern and Villareal will not come and defend so much. For the same reason we are likely to be better away from home where teams will be coming out to play more, that is true for the league as much as it is for the CL. Even in Naples we will have more chance to win the game than tonight.

Good that we didn't get beat and whoever said that Zabba and Kolarov was correct by Bob is spot on.

Overall the team got a lesson and we didn't get beat from it, so I'll take that.

Just got back - whilst we of course are disappointed not to win - in the end I was happy with the draw - Napoli are no mugs - not at all

Was a great occaision though - I got to CITY Square for 6pm and it was great to 'warm-up' there - CITY had reduced the price of beer as well

great night - just loved being there

There right back wasnt even involved with the goal.

He was not even in defense for the goal..We lost the ball deep in there half and he didnt get back.

The biggest problem with Lescott tonight was his distribution and when you pair him up with Kolarov on that side we are completely unbalanced and always run the risk of losing the ball.

Lots of sub par performances but only by the standards that we have set recently, we needed a plan B when it became obvious that we couldn't run through the centre and with AK & PZ we didn't have enough of a threat in that department.

Overall though, I loved the CL experience, the spine tingling CL theme, the atmosphere and just the general pageantry of it all

I don't know how you saw it on TV but I actually thought we played really well. Napoli, as thought, played on the break and ensured that they had near enough the full team in or around the 18 yard box when we were on the attack. Five at the back made it very difficult for us to penetrate but there were numerous occasions where we could have scored - Yaya and Edin to name a couple.

Out of fustration to get the goal we pushed to many men forward and we were warned on a couple of earlier occasions and it was no surprise when the goal came; too many players out of position. Luckily, our pressure told and even more luckily was the fact that Cliche was just about to come on for Kolarov before he put it away. I thought we should've gone on to win it but alas, it wasn't to be this time.

I thought a few of our players looked below par by the way and thought Carlos should've been on earlier, mainly for Aguero. The fans though, for both sides were excellent and although it got a little tense through the second half, renditions of Bluemoon and We're not Really Here soon reverberated around the ground.

All-in-all, it was a good first night in the CL and although we didn't get the 3 points I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Can't wait for the next game.

Roberto Mancini admits nerves got to his Manchester City side after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Napoli in their UEFA Champions League opener.

The match marked City's debut in Europe's top club competition and they could only take a point, with Aleksandar Kolarov cancelling out Edison Cavani's second half goal in the Group A encounter.

Mancini believes City's jitters were evident as they took to the top continental stage for the first time, but the Italian manager was pleased with their showing.

"We were so nervous," he told Sky Sports News. "It is normal. After many years we play our first game in the Champions League.

"The first game is always difficult and it was difficult to play against Naples because they defend really well and when they're on the counter attack they're really dangerous.

"We conceded a goal because for 10 minutes in the second half we played so-so. But after that we played well, I'm happy.

"We wanted to win but the Champions League is hard. For us it was important to start well."

Mancini says he had warned his side that Napoli were dangerous on the counter attack and admits losing a 'stupid ball' led to the opening goal.

"I told the guys, pay attention, because Naples are very good on the counter attack if we lose the ball," he said.

"But we lost a stupid ball in the middle.

"We played one touch too many in the first half, for me. When we had a chance - one touch more. That's all it is. If not (for that) I enjoyed this game."

The manager is confident City can make up the two points lost when they travel to Bayern Munich, who won their opener at Villarreal 2-0, later this month.

Asked if he was worried that City only managed to take a point in what has been widely branded the 'Group of Death', Mancini added: "No, we'll win in Munich next game."

I also felt we deserved a win, somehow early dominance went a begging. We really should have had an early goal. The two efforts that rapped the cross bars were unlucky but out of the two i have to say Yaya could have been more composed.Dzeko played well, very well actually but really felt he should have set up Silva who was unmarked right behind him rather than the turn and shoot option he went for.

I was a bit dissapointed with Barry did not feel he did enough in the second half.Kompany and Lescott were poor today especially Kompany he was really off his game tonight still managed to clear the line but overall he was left wanting.
