I like Yaya Toure for this, he gets slagged on here mercilessly and a lot of it with very little foundation.

I think that even though he plays further in the back, he is not instructed to be a traditional defensive mid. When we keep possession, about 60-70% of it is being played around between the back 4 and the defensive mids. Having a player like Yaya further away from goal allows us to draw out the 11 opposition players camped in their box. Makes the opposition become complacent from watching all these boring passes in a non-threatening area. Then bam - up the tempo and catch them off guard.
He is picked practically every game in a team that is running rampant. So to criticize him for what he doesn't do on the field (when we don't really know what exact instructions Mancini gives to every player) is quite harsh. Rather than slag him off for what he supposedly doesn't do, appreciate what he does do and the great value that brings to the team.

No, I'm sorry, I know what he's supposed to do when someone runs off behind him into the box & if he fails to do it, he's failing the team, just as AJ was v Wolves.

Maybe part of the reason that Yaya doesn't track back is because of our faith in our defense to snuff out attacks. And then once we get the ball back, Mancini doesn't like to hoof it up field which puts us on the back foot again.
I've seen a few times this season where the opposition attack runs by Yaya, only for our defense to snuff it out. When they win it back, Yaya is occupying the gap in between the defense and midfield, allowing for an easy outlet pass to start a quick attack. If he tracked back, our only option would be to look for a long ball and hope that we keep it. When Yaya can get the ball in with time to look up, Silva, Balo, Nasri, Dzeko... are all making runs further up field to score a goal.
