We got Heaney from Southampton, and sold Hiley to them (he came from Birmingham or Portsmouth, I think).

Birmingham. We got him on loan the year we went down ('96).

Brian Clark. He also seemed to say "Outside that City penalty area" far too often. He was also on some of the early 90's season review video's doing interviews with the likes of Mel Machin and Peter Swales.

He also used to say "City will need to be diligent here" far too often. Which we then weren't.
Also he used to miss large chunks of action so he'd be talking about us attacking, then "Goal" and just as you'd think "Brilliant, back in it now" He'd carry on to say "Two down with just half an hour played, City will need to be diligent here"

I remember having a chat with my mate at school and salivating at the prospect of the new season with Weah and Wanchope as our strike force.

Anyone remember that striker, human pogo stick, (and Stuart Pearce's secret weapon!!!) David James?

Jason Von Blerk, Aussie fullback
Kaz Deyna, Polish World Cup captain, a real song and dance when he rocked up at Maine Rd
Who was the keeper, Icelandic I think, who played heroically in the 3-4 FA Cup win against Spuds...Isaacson or summat? OMG just remembered Eike Immel as well :-(

I thank you, brilliant double save where he flung himself from one side of the goal to the other

I remember Kherkar playing for the reserves or maybe a single first team run out. He scored a couple of screamers and was then never really seen again !

Am I imagining this or did Trevor Cherry sign from Leeds and then move on, never actually playing for us? Or was that Ivan Golac?
Your right leg I like; I've got nothing against your right leg. The trouble is neither have you.

What about players who were bought for significant sums and then hardly given a game and then released? What were the real stories on these lads, assuming (giving our managers a little credit) it wasn't simply "he seemed good on TV but in reality was crap":-

Bobby Shinton
Michael Robinson
Matias Vuoso
Drago Stepanovic
Trevor Christie

Vuoso was a really strange one. Didnt he cost about 3.5 -4.5 million?? And never played! really weird.

There were a couple of similar incidents I recall:

Asa Hartford being bought by Clough for Notts F and sold without playing a game.
Clive Allen doing the same at Arsenal.

It just seems weird - like when Bond bought Martin O'Neill as a cheap replacement for Steve McKenzie and then shipped him out after half a season, or Big Mal doing the same with Robinson. One would have thought they would have had the courage of their convictions to give a player time (having made the decision that they had the quality on the basis of years of seeing them or scouting) rather than leaping to the sudden conclusion they were useless.
Robinson for instance, proved to be a decent Prem striker, just as Bradbury proved at other clubs he was a competent Div 2 (old) striker, but rather than supporting them we just chucked money away for change for the sake of change.
