Everyone in my family were born in manchester and my parents moved to the states and had me. Growing up I always rooted for England and to be honest the US were shit.

The qpr win resonated with Americans like crazy. It was maddening here really. Hardcore sports fans were loving the drama.

Is football/soccer your favourite game/main sporting passion or does it come second to one of your more traditional games?
I mean personally, not as a nation. Thats obvious.

The team I've got the most personal time, money, and passion invested in is the Detroit Tigers (baseball), but that goes back almost 30 years. Apart from that I don't follow American sports that much anymore...some Division 2 college athletics, a bit of NFL, and just the postseason in some of the other major sports.
I've supported City for 11 years and I can honestly say that in the last 5-6 years, with nearly every game now televised over here, that City have commanded more of my time as a sports fan than anything else, even the Tigers. There's so much televised football here now that I've taken to watching almost any kind, even enjoying dross like the CONCACAF Champions League.
I live up here in the, I don't know, Cumbria of the U.S., and there is not much in the way of football supporters around here let alone City fans. Loads of kids play the game here as everyone knows, but even the nearest USSF-recognized club is over 100 miles away from my town and they play in the 4th tier of the American pyramid. The point is there is a long way to go in this country in terms of translating participation into supporting a club.
With regards to City, the biggest reason the club is playing catch-up is that the Champions League is a major part of the game's appeal to American fans, and many of them just wouldn't even think to follow a club that wasn't competing in it. Our participation and (hopefully) success in the CL will help us no end in a place like America. As Chelsea have demonstrated, there are many millions of people who like to follow a successful club regardless of how many trophies that club might have won in the 80s and 90s.
Ironically the Rags will benefit us in our long-term growth, as the Manchester derby is already entering the public consciousness over here, and all potential football supporters love a good derby.
