Malaga Banned From Euro Competition?

Just reading through the Beebs Sports Wire and got this:

Uefa bans Champions League contenders Malaga from European club competitions for one upcoming season for failing to pay players wages and tax bills on time.

The Spaniards, who advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League with an unbeaten run through the group stages, will miss the next Uefa competition they qualify for in the seasons between 2012-13 and 2016-17.

The Qatari-owned Spanish club could be banned for a second season within the next four years if it misses a 31 March deadline to pay its debts.

Málaga CF (ESP): The club is excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next four seasons (i.e. 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17). In addition, Málaga will be excluded from a subsequent UEFA competition for which it would otherwise qualify (in the next four seasons) if it does not prove, by 31 March 2013, that it has no overdue payables towards football clubs or towards employees and/or social/tax authorities, in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations.

Málaga has also been fined €300,000. The prize money withheld on 11 September 2012 (as a conservatory measure) will be released.

The first 'Money Club' to be hit. Is this a sign of things to come?

Malaga, who have been banned from competing in the next Uefa competition that they qualify for over the next four seasons because of outstanding debts to other clubs, say they will fight their suspension.

"The measures taken against the club are absolutely disproportionate and unjustified given the club's situation. We consider that the club is being punished unfairly and used as an example to others," read a club statement.

"Given the total and absolute indignation and consternation on the part of the club, Malaga CF wishes to state that it will work energetically and without rest to achieve justice, using all available necessary means."

Club Statement:

Málaga Club de Fútbol wishes to express its total disagreement at the decision issued today by UEFA, and considers the intended actions against the Martiricos Club to be completely unjustified. The Club believes they are being made a ‘scapegoat’ and an ‘example of’ by UEFA by this unfair treatment. Given the total and absolute indignation and outrage at the decision, Málaga Club de Fútbol wishes to state they are working tirelessly to ensure justice is done, and will work with all organisations necessary until the situation is resolved. Málaga Club de Fútbol also wishes to add that they cannot comprehend the decision, and cannot understand why they now have to wait for an unspecified time period to find out why this decision was reached.

To give the fans peace of mind, Málaga Club de Fútbol wishes to state that they are continuing with the process of internal restructuring within the Club, which first got underway last summer, to come in line with the Fair Play regulations. Consequently, the agreement between the tax authorities and the Martiricos outfit will be made official, as the funds retained by UEFA have now been released. Furthermore, with the information that has come about regarding unfulfilled obligations by the Club with C.A. Osasuna and Málaga’s first team players, Málaga Club de Fútbol stresses that such agreements have now been settled, and the Club requests that any unfounded information which could undermine the Málaga Club de Fútbol name, is to be disregarded.

Nevertheless, despite the obstacles, the owners have come up against since their arrival at Málaga, their support for the project and the Club as a whole is indisputable. Evidence of this is a recent investment of more than seven million euros by owner, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani. Málaga Club de Fútbol deeply regrets having to breach the Club’s communications policy, and make public such confidential, internal matters, but as previously stated, they are working around-the-clock and making the necessary decisions to ensure justice is done.

as i understand it, the owner, abdullah al-thani pulled the money and then put the club up for sale because the expected planning permission for his new marbella marina "port al-thani" wasn't forthcoming. almost sounded like he was blackmailing the regional government at the time.....

It's whether they are still classed as a 'Money Club'. When they got took over there was talks of them doing a Chelsea or Man City but the end of last season saw them with real problems and the owner, Al Thani, doing a disappearing act. The staff had not been paid and I'm sure they had to sell a couple of players to keep them above water.

Maybe UEFA are starting small, set precedence and then move onto bigger fish.

Maybe we are being a tad cynical by considering that UeFA may just be going after a smaller club to test the waters. They also took action some time ago against several clubs who failed to meet the required financial requirements, Athletico Madrid were amongst that group.

TBH, I don't know what the whole outcome of that action was but I believe that most, if not all simply complied with UeFA's wishes or made adequate arrangements with the relevant authorities. If the Malaga statement is to be believed, they too seem to be bowing to UeFA's requirements rather than test it in court.

We have only recently had a statement made by a sports lawyer who I believe is close to city, warning that UeFA have beefed up their legal dept in recent times and have been lobbying hard in the European Commission. It also seems that at City, the club is trying to work our way to (near/nearer?) compliance, to solve our particular problems, rather than seek a legal battle.

Before anyone (Mancio) jumps on me about this, I am NOT suggesting we won't comply, just assessing where UeFA seem to be at and heading.

Just heard bits and bobs off several news reports about Malaga ......... seems UEFA are flexing there muscles and may yet hand them a 2 year ban on top of the already one year ? Poor buisness plan and losing money etc etc ....... inevitabley Sky News then showed bobby manc supping champers today and headlined our £97 million debt , fuckin shitbags !

Nothing's changed here, they are still punishing clubs that are unable to put enough money into their business (for whatever reason) - we still remain on the other side of the equation, as a club accused (by people with only half a clue) of putting too much money into our business.

Cant see much controversy here and I think it's actually encouraging for City.

There were 5 clubs in this little judgement I think - all for not paying their 'football debtors' or tax as I understand it. What right have clubs to buy players and not pay for them? Real Mallorca got a similar ban a couple of years ago.

So UEFA doesn't like debtors, City certainly doesn't fall into that category.

Mind you there will be a lot more bad debtors soon as FFP bites and transfer fees are no longer forthcoming to keep smaller clubs in business.

I believe Txiki is heavilly into this one & Mancini has been to watch him personally. Not sure he'll be leaving til summer though.

Of course if he does sign it will be great work by Txiki/Soriano/Mancini, if not it will be down to Brian Marwood (or if he signs & plays poorly).

Re Malaga, if they, and similar skint clubs, only get a one season ban for not paying wages, it makes it somewhat difficult for UEFA to ban us for paying our wages & transfer fees ontime & actually having no debt whatsoever.

Political fight, P.Banus and Benalmadena have superb marinas. The owners of Malaga had great plans for aspects of Andulucia. Looks like they have taken it to far now, or lost interest, The clubs outside the top two are scratching around in survival mode.

xisco would have been 8 when that was released.
