UEFA give Gill power to punish United's rivals... if they fall foul of financial fair play

By Ian Ladyman

PUBLISHED: 23:00, 17 June 2013 | UPDATED: 23:00, 17 June 2013

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill has been handed power by UEFA to recommend bans on clubs such as rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, who may find themselves in breach of new European Financial Fair Play rules.

Having stepped down from his post at Old Trafford at the end of last season to become a UEFA executive member, Gill has now been appointed chairman of the governing body’s extremely influential Club Licensing Committee.

The committee essentially decides which clubs are entitled to licences to play Champions League and Europa League football. This will become increasingly important as UEFA’s FFP rules shape the landscape of European football in the coming years.

Gill is a known advocate of FFP and one of four Barclays Premier League chiefs who proposed similar rules be implemented in English domestic football back in January.

He said 18 months ago that the new European system would only work if ‘appropriate sanctions’ were imposed on those who missed the targets. Sanctions already discussed by UEFA president Michel Platini have included fines and, for severe offences, competition bans.

Gill’s appointment will certainly raise eyebrows at clubs such as City and Chelsea who are currently striving to ensure their losses are no greater than the 845million (£38m) limit allowed by FFP across last and next season.

Both clubs have been used to viewing Gill as a rival in recent years and it will not have escaped their attention that the 55-year-old is to remain a United director and board member, despite handing over the chief executive baton to Ed Woodward.

On Monday night, a UEFA spokeswoman confirmed that Gill’s committee will have an influence over whether clubs’ finances entitle them to play in major European competition.

This is despite that fact that the Club Financial Control Body will go through individual clubs’ finances initially to see if they meet the targets set by FFP. Gill will play no role in this part of the process.

People still think we will roll over & accept this, if the shit hits the fan ?

The whole new financial regulation thing is a conflict of interests. Which is why it'll fail.

I am sure, with UEFA being so translucent and honest in their affairs and so hell bent on ensuring there isn't any corruption, that they will endure there are strict regulations in place to prevent Gill from abusing his position ...

Didn't the government threaten to step in if conflicts of interest within football wasn't sorted?

They probably meant our conflict of their interest if we stop Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool etc from winning everything.

Imagine in any other walk of life, a bloke devises a plan to change the rules, after, admittedly, being asked to do so by a corrupt billionaire politician who had been basically breaking said rules for many years himself, but now decided he could no longer afford to do so & wanted to prevent others from doing what he himself had been using to gain his club (and business) an advantage.

These rules are brought in, & the CEO of one of the main clubs to benefit, resigns & is then put in charge of determining which of said club's rivals are allowed to compete & on what terms.

Go for it Gill, lets see what happens.

I know Malaga were banned but that situation was different to what our's or Chelsea's would be.Correct me if i'm wrong but if a club show's it is trying to comply then did'nt UEFA say "leniency would be applied".

Surely if Uefa a really about the FFF then they would have to start with the likes of Monaco/ Real Madrid ect,
How can R M be in and linked to so many players on high tranfer fees were they are not exactly on par with their banking

Totally agree, how come it's mainly City that are mentioned when it comes to spending money. They may throw Chelsea's name in to the pot every now and again but what about the like of PSG, Real, Monaco?
We sign 2 players and straight away Sky saying "Man City already spending fortunes in this transfer window". So I take it no one else will be buying players.

Malaga's ban is nothing to do with new regulations mate, despite what some of the lazy red-tops add into the story. They owe the taxman money and the most cardinal sin of all they owe other clubs money for transfers. Exactly what happened to Real Mallorca 3 or 4 years ago.

Old rules.

Just learned about this. Amazing, simply amazing. He would still remain as a boardmember of one of rags and make calls over their rivals. How about rags themselves?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

The rags will never be in the position of having to worry about it as they are owned by people who are in it to make money, not spend or invest it.

Remember: taking money out of football & using it to prop up your other business interests= good.

Putting money into football & not asking for any of it back= bad.

Over half of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League are currently banned from UEFA competition for financial irregularities. It's so bad that the Europa League position that would normally go to the team that finished third in the league has gone to the team that finished ninth (out of 16).

As I mentioned when Gill's rival stepped down - they moved a large amount of money into Portugal with the purchase of Bebe because they anticipated needing some funds to buy off a future rival when they made their move - or is it purely coincidence?. All of this Allegedly.
If only we had some investigative journalists left rather than a bunch of limpwristed social commentators that they have morphed into these days.
