How did he do it?

Postby dazby » Tue Feb 04, 2014 10:55 pm

I haven't watched the game yet so I don't have a theory. John Terry after the game reckons they spent two days working on a plan to beat us. What was the Mourinho plan? How did they do it and what can we do to overcome this next time?

Plan was to say exactly this if they win ... and if they lose to say he already told you so, simples!

One of most impressive things about Chelsea last night is how they were happy to let Zabs and Kolorov run at them but every time a quality cross came in from the wings it was cut out by a Chelsea player. We've scored countless goals from those positions this season.

They were delighted to concede corners all game as they knew they had our number at set pieces.

They isolated Toure and refused to let him run the game. They also know that once he loses the ball in the middle of the park, he leaves us wide open to counter attacks and rarely tracks back. Despite his overall quality this season, we have shipped a few goals that came from him losing the ball and not winning it back.

I don't care how much they planned. They would have taken one look at our starting line up and thought the points were there for the taking.

I'm sorry to say this but imo we beat ourselves by playing 442 as we just got overun in Midfield.Chelsea played well but they had more space than an apollo moonmission to run into on the counter attack.

It was about discipline with 6 players staying rigidly in their positions and serious pressing of the front men so Yaya/Silva get nothing easy. Then the shape at the back so the low crosses don't get across. They needn't worry about high crosses.

Yep.

Or toure makes contact with the first of Kolarov's many brilliant crosses.

It became a 50 50 game after the first 20 mins.

...and we should have scored more from that position last night. The only reason we didn't is cos we couldn't finish em off for whatever reason. It was just mild luck on chelsea's part

Having now watched it back, I would say 30 minutes.

But the main thing they did was man mark Silva & press Toure very early, who when he did lose the ball was then very isolated & rarely got back into defensive lines. The goal came from sloppy defending by him who ambled toward Ivanovic then got out of the way of the shot instead of closing him down & putting his body in the way.

We got caught to high with the pace of their forwards & lack of pace of our defensive mids giving them acres to run into. Toure is a liability when playing defensively in these types of games as he will not rush back, so would have been better playing him behind one of the strikers & giving someone else the role (maybe 1/2 & 1/2 Rodwell & Milner if neither fully fit) that he was supposed to play.

A major set back but not a killer blow, just need to learn from what happened & move on, especially developing a Plan B

Spot on. We missed a few in the 1st half. Chelsea rode their luck and capitalised.

There game plan was to get us crossing the ball in from wide areas. Terry and Cahill will back themselves all day to win these duels.
Maureen also protected the back four with Matic and Luiz which stopped us playing the ball in behind the full back which we do to great effect.
I agree with previous posts though, and never has the statement about scoring when you're on top, been so true.
Had we taken one of our early chances then I'm sure we would have at least got a point.
On the night I thought they'd got it spot on tactically, but in hindsight he got a bit lucky.
First we lost Fernandinho just before kick-off (he wouldn't have known about this), which caused us to change our thinking. And then we failed to score from two fantastic chances, which would have changed his thinking.

Stopped yaya and silva playing. Demi had acres but his distribution is nowhere near these two.

The most impressive piece of tactical genius was managing to play us with Aguero, Nasri & Fernandinho out injured - genius!

Hows about on Feb 15th they play without Hazard, Matic & Ramires and see how they get on?

They also were pretty smart with their full backs. They knew Silva wouldn't play as a winger on the left, so they let Ivanovic roam freely on that side. We got very little joy down the left in the game.

However, on the right they knew Zabba & Navas would link up, so they Azpil rarely went forward. Also, Zabba seemed to get into Navas' space a lot in their third - just wasn't a good game from Zabba overall I thought.

And Terry/Cahill defended corners/crosses very well. I think playing two target men up front was exactly what they hoped for. Neggers was anonymous, and Dzecko failed to hit the target a lot (as usual).

And also, as someone else said earlier, they smothered Yaya (and Silva) in the middle.

In fairness, they stopped us from playing *and* they took one of their chances while we didn't.

You got to hand it to them, they outplayed us on the night.

Most worrying thing for me is that the Count didn't haul off Neggers earlier and put in Millner or Jovi.

The way I saw it was kolorov got quite a bit of space down the left and put in a good few crosses we were unlucky to convert

Eto was just a floater, Occupying both Vinny and Dozy bollocks, Glichy should have played at Centre half and man marked him. Hazzard was to get the ball into his feet for the MF to join in, it looked like a wave of Chelsea when in fact they had 6 men in there half never leaving the stations. Negredo, was fucking injured and should never have started, Ferny was a big miss as YAYA was caught between covering the holes in our area between Defence and MF. No master class from the deluded one just an off night with us missing pace upfront and Ferny doing what he does. Oh and a 80 yard Punt from keeper to wide positions, Class tactics with journos wanking over it..
