Sad news. Probably the last of the heroes in my Big Book of Football Champions, 1955.Lovely manfrom a time when players earned a bit more than plumbers, but not much.

He retired before I was born, but I had the good fortune to meet him once and my Grandad who saw him play was unceasing in his praise of the man.

The tributes to him are all completely justified and we'll never see football players of his kind ever again.

Met him once at Deepdale in the sponsors lounge, a thoroughly charming gent. There's a nice story about him receiving a letter from a fan's wife once. It was going to be her husband's 50th birthday and with the letter she sent Tom a birthday card for hubby for him to sign and send back as a surprise. Tom rang the woman and asked when the party was. He duly turned up on the night to present the card himself.

The event that I liked was when England played USSR in the 1958 WC. England won a penalty, Tom Finney, who was left footed, took it with his right and scored (against Yashin, probably the best goalie of his generation. Does anyone else know of someone taking a pen with his "wrong" foot?

I saw the penalty on TV with a programme by Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson.

He was ambidextrous so it wasn't that big a risk!
