I know quite a few on Mancityfans.net have always been interested and supportive of my research & writing and, although this is not specifically about City, I'm sure one or two of you may be interested. I've written a paper on the birth of Manchester's football culture between 1840 and 1884 for an academic journal. At 7pm today I'll be posting a link to my paper which will give free access to the first 50 who download it. This paper has been written in an academic format rather than the style of my usual works, but I'm sure quite a few of you will be interested in its contents. It's not a piece on MCFC (or mufc for that matter), but it does talk of the birth of Manchester football and provides for the first time evidence of what took place in the city before 1884.

There have been a few mentions about my academic paper in the Sunday Mirror and elsewhere, but the talk will be the first time the story has been told properly and in more detail. A few of you have heard me go on (quite a bit) about how I care passionately about researching this period and getting it right, sorry! The key thing for me is to get this info out there (properly acknowledged of course). This is part of ongoing research I am doing on Manchester football which will be published in various forms over the coming years.

There is so much more to explain about Manchester's footballing birth that, to date, has not found its way into any publication. Watch this space, but first if you're interested look out for the link at 7pm for the free download.

Do you ever come across much mention of East Chorlton FC or West Didsbury AFC in your research Gary?

Can't think of anything significant for East Chorlton at the moment but West Didsbury yes. I'm pretty sure I've got a booklet on its history produced in 1980s (75th anniversary possibly?). I've just checked a Manc FA Handbook I have from the 30s and surprisingly neither team appears - surely they were both Manc FA members (or did they qualify as Cheshire FA clubs - there's that awkward rule that means clubs that play south of the Mersey are in Cheshire FA territory, but surely that wasn't an issue?).

Thanks to all those who have downloaded and read it. I am self funded in my phd research and don't make any money out of this article/research. My motivation is to improve our knowledge of this period. It may not be directly about City but it's setting the scene for my next papers. Just a word on the history of this paper - it was finalised back in July last year, so it's taken a long time to print. The next papers are also in the process, so watch this space.
