I also liked that he didnt accepted the legitimacy of the Crimea referendum, despite praising the Falkland Islands one last year, which was about as official as a school debate. He needs to keep his mouth shut on this one as I know for a fact that the UK Govt at least have considereded to anex Faslane in the event of a Yes vote in Scotland. I have a friend who works about for the Defense Deparment at the Scots office who hinted to me to it was under consideration. A few weeks later it was leaked to the papers and there were denials all round but it was certainly discussed. Given there are no waters deep enough to hold nuclear subs in the rest of the UK I don't see any other option for them.

Pretty much but a bloody effective one at that. America does not have the stomach for another military conflict. China does not give a fuck and the rest of Europe is economically tied to Russia. Russia are showing after twenty odd years of not being taken seriously that they have big brass balls and are not afraid to get them out from time to time to remind us.

They could march into any of the ex Soviet countries in the next year or so and we would not lift a finger. I was speaking to a friend in Estonia last week and they are very concerned that it may come to this. Pretty much everyone over the age 50 considers themselves Russian anyway.

I was based in Faslane back in the 80,s and I would say that whatever deal there might be with Scotlands possible independence Faslane will remain under Londons control....fact.

I don't see any alternative unless the UK wants to give up nuclear weapons. Which is why Cameron is making a huge mistake getting involved in the situation in Crimea.

Annex is a bit of a strong word isn't it? Is rent free 'lease' not more appropriate, same sort of deal that Russia had with the Ukraine over Sevastopol?

This is getting a bit silly. There is zero parallel with Crimea. London is not going to annex Faslane with or without a referendum. There might be a deal with an independent Scotland which is an entirely different matter. Since Scotland is going to vote no by a large margin the matter won't arise anyway.

To get back to the topic Abramaovic is bound to be a bit concerned and it might affect his behaviour. I don't think he'll be targeted but he doesn't know for sure and as a rational person he might start making dispositions accordingly.

There wont. The SNP have always been anti nuclear weapons in Scotland. The spending plans in the White paper are made from the savings of not paying for trident anymore. The prospect of a nuke free Scotland is being used to entice those on the Left who do not already suppourt the SNP to vote Yes. They would be strung up on the street if they went back on this one.

I would. There will not be a UK annexation of Faslane under any circumstances. It ain't going to happen. Scotland will vote no. You can take it to the bank.

I trust you'll be going with the Euro when you break the Union? Considering the pound sterling is almost as English as tea and scones.

They will have to take it to an English bank if they vote no, the 'Royal Bank of Scotland' might have to change it's name too.

Correct, it'll remain English together with access along the coast from Newcastle, together with anything there may be offshore in that area.

Its not the depth of water its where to store and load Tridents, Falmouth harbour is deep enough to have V Boats as is Plymouth, its where they do their refits.

We'll have to go carefully if there's any mileage in this Faslane issue; the Scots might retaliate and annexe Berwick.
