If the ref didn't see it, admissions are useless to him, all he can use is the word of his fellow officials.

The ref awarded it - they can only appeal mistaken identity.

No it's not. It's usually a yellow if the player isn't in front of goal.
And if the ball was going out anyways, why should arse have a player sent off? Oxly way very stupid but the punishment was extremely disproportionate and killed the game
