ah, the contract. Who knows if ashley has clauses in there that mean he doesnt pay up in full?...for someone seemingly so prudent and reluctant to back his manager with funds it would seem odd to pay him a fortune to fuck off...but as I said, I dont get ashley

I don't buy into the idea that Pulis or Fat Sam are great managers who have a fantastic method of rescuing clubs. They just play safe & take few risks & accept their limitations; that's how they 'succeed'. Curbishley was the same at Charlton & as soon as they fired him, they disappeared.
Moyes is another one. Probably an improvement on Pardew but another who can keep you happily mid table. Martinez can take Everton higher than Moyes did, but if things went pear shaped, Moyes would be more likely to survive than Martinez imo.
Moyes blew his chance, Pardew is probably blowing his & Hughes has become the same after blowing his big chance.
Britain & Ireland now produce mid table managers, even the better ones end up there. Rodgers will probably get found out eventually.

I would argue then that the only way to improve to the next level, then, is to massively invest.

Don't quite agree re: Hughes. He was fairly sensible at Fulham and overly cavalier at QPR, but he seems to have found a nice balance at Stoke - at once improving their football and pulling them up the league. Some of the players he's brought in have looked brilliant. Ireland is looking confident again - getting on the ball and probing - and Arnautovich (sic) is top notch. £2 million they paid for him!
Odemwingie has done very well too.
I think Stoke will be looking at finishing in the top eight next year.

I don't mean that Hughes is like Sam or Pulis, I mean that he has missed his chance to go up a level & will now be concentrating on the best way to get Stoke to reach 8th ie: mid table football. That will be his career mapped out & Moyes will probably be battling alongside him. When these guys have had a chance to put their theories into practice at a higher level Prem team, for whatever reasons, they have all missed the opportunity, same with Fat Sam at Newcastle, Pearce at City, Woy at Liverpool.
People always ask why they don't get a chance at bigger clubs, but when they do, they can't take it.
Be interesting to see what Diego Simeone would make of the Newcastle job.
