Maybe the votes had to be cast a couple of weeks ago when it looked like dippers might actually win it. Perhaps these hacks who one suspects, mostly support the dippers, thought it would be fitting for Stevie to win it.

The stars were aligned. The justice for the 96. He's a local boy. One club man. England stalwart. He deserves it. Take your fuckin pick.

There is no way in the memory of man Gerrard has had a better season than Yaya. Every single pundit, either in print or on TV, raves about Yaya and week in week proclaim him the best midfielder not only in Prem but often Europe

Absolutely bang on my friend!
The bandwagon was well & truly hitched some weeks ago.
The awards HAD (and possibly still have) been dished out with Liverpool doing a clean sweep.
Brenda is still nailed on for the manager of the year, Suarez & Stevie Starfish and I'm still amazed that
Sterling didn't win the Young Player of the Year also.
Its going to take at least 5 years of us dominating the domestic game before our team and our players get
the recognition they deserve.
Hopefully, it will make this Sunday afternoon all the more sweeter...

I was watching Bein Sports last night and Richard Keys asked Andy Cole the same question.

"It is because he is black and African"

Ackward silence followed.

I am struggling to find another reason.

David Silva is white, but got left out of the Sky team for Rahim fucking Sterling. I wonder which one Barca & Real Madrid would pick.

It's Utd, Liverpool, London.

Agreed. Its as simple as that. Little old City are not so little anymore and certain sections don't like it.

To be honest, I think the rags count as a London team as they have the second most fans down there, and the dippers also have a good following there.

Especially in the media.

Some of the southern journos who are fair minded, are very good with City, but most non rag/dipper neutrals have their own clubs' agendas, plus the rags & dippers as 2nd favourites. And of course the 'loveable' Harry etc.

We are up against it on two fronts.

Sentiment over reality in my view.

I like Gerrard and he has been a great servant to Liverpool but it's hard to see how he is better than YaYa this year.
I'd hoped his would be one of those times where stats would back me up with this view and show that despite Gerrard getting the sentimental vote YaYa should get the football vote.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any that quite support that view.
Squawka have the top 4 players from the Opta analytics as Suarez, Gerrard, Hazard and Toure. What seems to swing Gerrard's score is the sheer number of chances he has created, 60 odd versus 30 odd for YaYa.

Hmm. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 of those 'chances' are from set pieces.

If you need stats to work out whether Gerrard has been better than Yaya Toure or not then you probably shouldn't really bother with football. It's a no brainer.

That's where I started. To me it's a no brainer.

But, whereas I've seen Yaya play thirty odd games in the flesh this year I've seen Gerrard play two, so it's not exactly a fair comparison.

Maybe you've seen more?

Yaya hasn't had to create chances since he's scored every time he's been given the ball.

I've seen a lot more. Suarez has been the one pulling them through games. Then Sturridge. Gerrard has been good, but not exceptional like Suarez has been at times. Yaya has been exceptional like Suarez.

I saw yaya dive twice and it disgusted me.

I saw suarez cheat about 4-5 times per game.

It really is a pity that is not taken into account when awarding players for how they "play".

Thee has been some silly winners of all sorts of football awards over the years but that topped it all. He was having decent season then but best player in the league? That was beyond silly.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?
