29th May 1985

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

29th May 1985

Postby Beefymcfc » Thu May 29, 2014 7:21 pm

I know this is probably a little late in the day (and I don't mind if nobody posts) but I do feel it's worth reminding people of what can happen when fans rule the terraces. After this season where Liverpool commemorated their lost souls, where we were reminded on a daily basis, one thing that cannot be forgotten is what happened that night in Heysel some years earlier.

I won't post any pictures or video as I don't think it right, some just don't want to see it, but the memory of what happened that day turned out to be a real turning point in where we are today. The fact that the stadium was inadequate can probably be ignored in this case, it was just malicious violence.

RIP the 39, it wasn't your fault.

Its the one day of the year when you rarely here a peep from Liverpool FC and its fans. A date they seem to have trouble recalling.

RIP to those who lost their lives from Juventus FC.

I remember that evening well. It was very sad and a wrong decision to carry on with the game IMO. I don't think the players wanted to play either.

I remember watching it on the television in the Claremont in Moss Side. Heartbreaking/sickening.

It certainly brought to head the trouble with football in England and how much it had been getting covered up when the countries 'shining light' team where shown for what they really where.

To the point that Thatcher tried to force the FA to pull us out of European football - like it was thier fault and not the Liverpool fans who went on a wild rampage. Europe stealing the march and banning all English clubs was probably one of the best things to happen to English football to try and start the clean up act - as opposed to covering it all up.

Shouldnt take loss of life to unmask the guilty like it did - but I suspect we'll see it again at some stage - too many people have conflicting priorities in the world of football.

Yep, there was a well observed silence in Liverpool yesterday. Not out of respect, they just don't like to talk about it.

They have nothing to talk about, because it was absolutely nothing to got to do with them whatsoever, it was someone else who attacked the juventus fans.

Didn't they try to pin it on Chelsea fans?

Remember it well too. Wasn't clear for a while at the time what was happening. There was that Juve fan with the scarf on his face pointing imaginary pistols at people from about 100 yards away.

Small minded thuggery leading to big tragedy.

No one learnt anything. Went on a cabinet office emergency planning course about 10 years ago and basically there wasn't any emergency planning until the late 90s.

Also sadly there wasn't much common sense at football stadia, as the average manager-in-the-street with a bit of gumption would have planned many of these things better.
