Catch it or Punch it?

Postby Wonderwall » Mon Nov 24, 2014 11:38 am

Hart has decided he doesn't like to catch the ball any more, even when he is not under pressure he has punched it. He did it twice against Swansea and the fella who stands behind me nearly exploded when he did it the second time.

It doesnt bother me too much as it usually clears danger but against Swansea it went straight to a white shirt each time. However, when under no pressure , he should catch it IMO.

On at least one of them occasions he was coming over the top of Yaya's head so punching was the right option, if you are coming through players always punch, only catch if you can jump unimpeded.

You should only punch the ball when

a) you are under extreme pressure
b) You can be sure you get good distance with your punch

On Saturday and several times recently Joe has done neither.

+1

and C) . Respect the fact that the Modern ball is a very deceptive and powerful beast. Think only of Kolarovs power.... that mother must hurt when caught ( shots from the likes of Kola).

I wouldn't have liked to try and catch Cliche's shot. Mind you I wouldn't have liked to punch it either.

You are taught to catch. As a kid I was never ever taught a punching technique but this has changed over the years with more continental keepers coming to the UK. Punching is when you are under serious pressure. If anyone saw the Palace Vs Liverpool game yesterday would have seen some proper keeping from Julian Speroni. Caught everything, perfect clean hands. For a small guy he does very well and IMO is very underrated.

With this in mind I'd say it's fairly safe to assume that Hart is punching under instruction given the coaches he's worked with at club level for the last 5 years.

I'm with Sister of Fu. Always catch it. The goalie has license to come and batter the fuck out of the forward and get away with it. Joe is a big lad and as such should assert himself better in his area and be more commanding. Bit like Schmeical or Jennings.

Catch it if you can catch it. If not, punch.
