Elano

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Elano

Postby Crossie » Tue Feb 24, 2015 12:40 pm

I don't remember seeing that at the time.

It looks like Elano was promoting himself for a move back to the prem in the winter.

His daughter is a City fan as she was born when he was playing for us.

Great player who maybe came a bit too soon for us but amazing to see a player of such quality in our shirt back then.

I was sitting on the first row of the first tier just by the 16 metre line in that game against Pompey when he was playing right back. His touch was amazing.
His defending wasn't ;-)

Out of this world for the first 12 games or so and thought we had a genuinely world class player in him.
Distinctly average for the rest of his City career bar one great game against Hamburg.

Crap player. Hit a good pass and a good free kick now and again. Other times it went in row Z.

Even slower then David Brightwell and specialised in giving it away on the oppo penalty line - or .xxxxxx.yyy metres!

If Elano had put in the same amount of work off the ball, that Silva & Nasri do, he would have been a top player for us imo. Same with Robinho. Both worked much harder for Brazil, but were still way down on what is expected at City (or any other top club). No respect for us.

In those days, there were quite a number of people who thought it was ok for them to swan around when they lost the ball, & that it was only an idiot who asked such players to track back & get behind the ball. Nowardays any of our players get slaughtered if they don't. And guess what ? We win stuff.

I think he was too lightweight tbh. I know Nasri and Silva aren't beasts by any means but both are deceivingly strong (especially Silva) at holding off challenges and putting their bodies between the man and the ball.

Elano on the other hand was knocked off the ball by a stiff breeze.

I thought when I saw him play for Brazil in qualifying games, he could at times really get stuck in. But only if he felt like it. Bit like Ireland & Michael Johnson too when I think about it.

I liked him a lot but he, and Robinho were c...s. I remember at Portsmouth away when they deliberately went against Hughes instructions and Bellamy went ape shit at them. They reminded me of my time trying to coach stoned FE students.Even Sven had no time for him after Sheffield United and lets face it, Sven was no stranger to taking liberties, lol

Played here in the Indian super league. Was okay apart from some long range goals. He was the top scorer and donated all the prize money he got back for the development of Indian football.

On his day he had me on the edge of my seat and stuck out like a sore thumb.

He didn't have enough of those days but I'll always hold him in high regard.

Would be delighted to see him back.
